Montie J. "Jane" Alexander
NEWARK - Montie J. "Jane" Alexander, 89, passed away Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center operated by Hospice of Central Ohio after a courageous fight against cancer. Jane was born August 11, 1928 in Joplin, Missouri to the late Charles D. and Montie Q (Simmons) Bennett.
Jane graduated from Joplin High School and received an Associate Degree at Joplin Community College. She moved to Washington, D. C., as a young adult to work as a civilian for the Department of the Navy. There she met and married her late husband, James H. Alexander, who was serving in the Air Force. She followed her husband to various duty stations around the world until he retired. She became Newark's First Lady, when she successfully managed his campaign for mayor in 1967.
Jane rejoined the work force as her last child entered college. In addition to working for Defense Construction Supply Center, Jane became a Claims Examiner for the Social Security Administration. She also returned to college, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Social Psychology, graduating summa cum laude from Park College.
Her passion was conservative grass roots politics, and she ran for and served on Newark City Council. But more important to her, with her energy, effort, and money, she supported the candidacies of many, believing that new fresh idealists were what this country needed. It would be an understatement to suggest that Jane encouraged vision, debate, inclusion, integrity, and participation in the political process.
Jane is survived by her three children, Keith B. (Kathy) Alexander of Millersport, Janet S. Alexander of Newark, and Amy Alexander (Larry) Hookway of Columbus; three grandchildren, Kelly (Brian) Gartz, Samantha Hookway (Nils Landin) and Alex (Catherine) Hookway; and three great-grandchildren, Taylor and Madelyn Gartz and Felix Hookway; brother-in-law, David Barnes and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, and her husband.
