GRAHAM — Mr. Bernard Shepherd, 80, of 415 W. Pine Street, Graham, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007, at his home.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 27, at the Graham Presbyterian Church, where he was a member. Officiating will be the Rev. Steve Braswell and the Rev. Amanda Anderson.
Born in China Grove, Mr. Shepherd was the son of the late James Columbus Shepherd and the late Lula Mae Braun Shepherd.
Mr. Shepherd was the retired co-owner of Bernard Shepherd clothing store in Greensboro. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. Mr. Shepherd was a former member of the First Lutheran Church in Greensboro. There he served as Chairman of the Pastoral Committee, a member of the Church Council, a Sunday School teacher and on the Personnel Committee.
Mr. Shepherd served on the Board of Directors for North and South Carolina Retailers, the Better Business Bureau, the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and the Friendly Shopping Center Merchants Association, where he was past president for two terms. He was vice-president of the Greensboro Merchants Association in 1977 and president in 1978. He served as chairman of the Greater Greensboro Fall Fashion Concert in 1977 and 1981. He was a member of the Greensboro Sports Council, the Summit Rotary Club, where he served as past president, the Greensboro Crime Stoppers, the Greensboro Club and the Greensboro City Club and the Greensboro Jaycees.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Holt McQueen Shepherd, of the home; two sons, Ray Wesley Shepherd and his wife, Molly, of Richmond, Va., and John Bernard Shepherd of Asheville; two grandchildren, Grace Ellen Shepherd and Amelie Faith Braun Shepherd; step-son, Clifton Paige Flynn, III and his wife, Jill, of Spartanburg, S.C.; step-grandchildren, Harrison Flynn and Clay Lansford; and step-daughter, Mrs. Shawn McQueen Smith and her husband, Brad, of Burlington; step-sons, Robert Hughes McQueen and his wife, Peggy, of Greensboro and Chapman Teague McQueen and his wife, Shannon, of Burlington; nine step-grandchildren; and his former wife, Mrs. Ellenor Eubanks Shepherd.
Mr. Shepherd was preceded in death by a grandchild, Jackson Wesley Shepherd; two sisters, Frances Cameron and Virginia Shepherd and three brothers, James Shepherd, Lamont Shepherd and Raymond Shepherd.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Church Parlor.
