Dear Valerie,

The Tuesday afternoon Bible Study members at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Durham want to reach out to you at this sad time for you and your family. Doug was a beloved alumni drum major for the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band. I loved chatting with him at our alumni events. Just last May, he led the alumni band in a 2 1/2 mile parade for the Indianapolis 500. Hard to believe he's gone.

Doug was a really brilliant guy. He was in our night book club, and he always added a lot to our discussions. We will all say something tomorrow night at our meeting in his memory, and the entire book club will miss him. Please accept our deepest condolences.
