With much sadness I discover that Mac McCarthy has entered life eternal. I sent Christmas greetings to him, but got no response. To my regret, I had not followed up, now I know the reality of Mac's passing.

Mac had been troop leader for my brother-in-law in Clifton. I was in Troop 221 Wyoming and we needed a Scoutmaster. On an eventful evening in Sept 1954 I called Mac and asked if he would consider taking our Troop. He came to our next meeting, talked with our parents, and from that time on for about the next 50 years, Mac led Troop 221.

At the ceremony in Feb 2000 honoring Mac's 50 years as Scoutmaster, I begged his forgiveness for what I had done to him! He smiled.

Mac was the most formative man in my growing years. More than the myriad details of outdoor survival and living which he transmitted to us (I used them well in Navy survival training), was the example of gentle manhood and its values he showed us, and more importantly demanded of us as we matured. I have fallen short of his example many times, but the best of me, when I've adhered to his example, came from Mac McCarthy.

If any of Mac's nieces or nephews reads these words, I would enjoy contact from you to relate my sincere feelings and to discuss ideas for memorializing Mac in scouting.

May light perpetual shine upon him,

John C. Davis, II

Mac was a mentor of all the Giuseffi boys in the Boy Scouts, those canoe and summer camp trips to Canada, are still some of my most cherished memories. He was, kind, generous, and always supportive. My brother Mark and I used to go with Mac on hikes and birding trips to the Shawnee forest. He enjoyed those and always knew the names of all the trees in any season. He also did hiking trips with us in Glacier to avalanche lake.
He will be sorely missed and always remembered.

Mac was the leader of our Boy Scout Troop in Price Hill back in the mid 50's. He was always a good and kind individual who was a positive presence in the life of us young kids. Even though I haven't seen Mac in over 60 years I still thought of him from time to time. He was good to all of us and I truly morn his passing. My sincerest sympathies to his family.

Mac was one of the rare individuals who truly made a difference in the lives of countless young boys and young men during all of his many years in scouting. His dedication and caring meant more than words can say and so many men now treasure their adventures in the outdoors, both past and present. Mac left quite a legacy!
