So sorry for your loss. May you find comfort and strength in God's promise found at John 6:40.

The note slipped out of a pile of papers I was shuffling through. It was a bit yellowed and the blue ink had faded some but it was still readable: I remember you every night in my prayers. Love Grandma M.' Mary Merrell wasn't my biological grandmother, but the grandma of a childhood best friend, and when I was a child she took me in as an adopted granddaughter of sorts.

She was faithful. Every birthday, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Halloween she sent a card with a note in her signature script and a crisp bill of varying denominations. Through my college and young adult yearseven though I had moved states awaythe cards kept coming. And when I married and had a baby more cards started coming infor my husband and my son now, too.

When my young family moved back to Ohio, my Grandma M happened to be moving into a retirement home. She told us that we could have anything we wanted from her housechairs, the dining room table, lamps and a coffee table, wall hangings, dresser sets and nightstandsand her generosity furnished our small rental home.

It was this kind of generosity and deep love that made Grandma M the woman that she was.
And in many ways she models the kind of woman I hope to become: one who welcomes the little ones" around her, and who loves in all the seemingly small ways that eventually accumulate into a legacy.
