I spoke with my Dad, Sid Jacobson, who reminded me that he had met Ernie back in the 50's when they both were boycubs at Harveys. They even double-dated, Ernie with his bough and my dad with his. Apparently both couples hit it off cause they married. And one turned out to have Kathy and me! So, they were chums from the beginning. And their friendship grew as did their creative partnership, which bore so much fruit! Now, everyone knows how they worked at Harveys (the Richie and Caspar worlds) for something like 30 years (Ernie's style always so recognizable, strong confident lines). But, even while at Harveys, they began to work on some of their own things together. I don't remember all the stuff they did, but they did a book called "The Black Comic Book", which I loved. In this they took well-known comic characters and then showed you the racism he or she would face if they were black. That book woke me up to prevalence of racism in the country in a profound way. And, then the last 15-years, with comics as a medium on the wane, reinventing themselves and doing those mostly non-fiction graphic novels ("9/11", "Anne Frank", "Che") and the (hopefully) to be published "3/5ths a Man." Ernie's work seemed to get better with age --- like some of my favorite of his is in Anne Frank. When Dad is working on a project, I will always ask "You're working with Ernie, right?" and he will say, "Of course." I'm gonna keep asking him this. Love to the Colon family and Ruth and all those who knew and now have lost him.

Extending heartfelt condolences and prayers of comfort to the family of Ernie Colon. Growing up & reading the comic books that Ernie created brought much joy to me as a little girl. I thank him for that & I pray that the family be comforted by this encouraging promise. John 11: 24 & 25
