Margaret "Pat" Muir
Margaret "Pat" Muir passed away in Phoenix on June 14, just five days after her 97th birthday. She died peacefully and naturally of old age with her family at her side. She had been in failing health and was in hospice care.
Pat was born and raised in Morristown, New Jersey, the third of four children to Scottish immigrants Elizabeth MacIntosh Green and William M. Green. She lived for many years with her husband Frederick M. Muir Jr. and children Susan and Fred in Wyckoff, New Jersey. After the death of her husband in 1990, Pat split her time between winters in Phoenix and summers in Beach Haven, New Jersey, where she maintained homes.
She had a full life of friends, family and career. Pat was first trained as a nurse and served as a commissioned lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard hospital ships that took her throughout the Pacific region and across the U.S. She later earned a BS in Education and taught health and sex education for many years in the Wayne, New Jersey, high school system. Pat went on to earn a Masters Degree in Public Health and accumulated many advanced credits beyond her Masters.
Everyone who knew her loved her. Pat was kind, generous and a lot of fun. She was always busy, determined about the things that mattered and easy on the things that didn't. She was a life-long gardener, liked sporty cars and puttering in her homes. She had friends of all ages and was the person everyone confided in.
Pat could never sit still even after retirement. In her 60s she was a volunteer for women's and children's causes; in her 70s she became a basketball fan and was a regular at Phoenix Suns games, and in her 80s she became passionate about politics and was a CNN junkie -- and doted on her long-hair Chihuahua, Billy.
Pat was an unabashed and outspoken liberal. She was a feminist and supporter of reproductive rights and was an enthusiastic supporter of President Bill Clinton -- so much so, that her family obtained a life-size photo cutout of the president for her.
Pat lived independently well into her 90s. Her longevity may have been due to, or in spite of, her habit of ordering banana splits and sundaes for dinner rather than dessert.
Pat is survived by her daughter Susan Gerard of Phoenix, her son Fred Muir of Los Angeles, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Pat asked that any donations in her memory be made to Planned Parenthood.

My deepest condolences to your family during this most difficult time. There are no words that can ease the pain of losing someone so beloved. May you find comfort and peace in knowing that your loved one is in God's memory, because those who pass on are precious in his eyes Psalms 116:15.
