John Barry Obituary

LONDON(AP) - Five-time Oscar-winning composer John Barry, who wrote music for a dozen James Bond films, including "You Only Live Twice" and "Goldfinger" but could not persuade a jury that he composed the suave spy's theme music, has died. He was 77.

Mr. Barry died in New York, where he had lived for some time, on Sunday, his family said. The family did not release the cause of death.

Though his work on the Bond films is among his most famous, the English-born composer wrote a long list of scores, including for "Midnight Cowboy," "Dances with Wolves" and "Body Heat." He was proud of writing both for big action blockbusters and smaller films.

He won two Oscars for "Born Free" (1966), for best score and best song. He also earned statuettes for the scores to "The Lion in Winter" (1968), "Out of Africa" (1985) and "Dances with Wolves" (1990).

His association with Agent 007 began with "Dr. No" in 1962, although his contribution to that film was not credited and is in dispute.

Monty Norman, who was credited as the composer for "Dr. No," sued The Sunday Times in 2001 for reporting that Mr. Barry had composed the theme, working from scraps of Norman's work. Norman won the case, collecting 30,000 pounds ($48,000).

Mr. Barry testified that he was paid 250 pounds to work on the theme music, developing the guitar line from part of Norman's song "Bad Sign, Good Sign," but agreed that Norman would get the credit. He was asked whether Norman wrote the theme and responded, "Absolutely not."

In later years Mr. Barry limited his comment on the case to saying, "If I didn't write it, why did they ask me to do the other ones?"

He subsequently wrote music for "Goldfinger," "From Russia with Love," "Thunderball," "You Only Live Twice," "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," "Diamonds Are Forever," "The Man with the Golden Gun," "Moonraker," "Octopussy," "A View to a Kill" and "The Living Daylights."

Born John Barry Prendergast, he recalled growing up "exposed to the fantasy life of Hollywood" at the eight theaters his father owned in Northern England.

"Rather than talkie-talkie movies, I liked films with excitement and adventure, because they were the ones that had the music," Mr. Barry said in an interview with The Guardian newspaper in 1999.

"It was nice to have the very commercial Bondian thing .x.x. and then at the same time have these smaller movies which were artistically more interesting to do," he said.

Other films included "Robin and Marian," "Somewhere in Time," "The Cotton Club," "Peggy Sue Got Married" and "Howard the Duck." He was also nominated for Oscars for his scores of "Mary, Queen of Scots" (1971) and "Chaplin" (1992).

Mr. Barry trained as a pianist, studied counterpoint with York cathedral organist Francis Jackson, and later took up the trumpet. He founded a jazz group, the John Barry Seven, in 1957.

The group teamed with singer Adam Faith, scoring hits with "What Do You Want?" and "Poor Me," and Barry moved into film work when Faith was tapped to star in "Beat Girl" (titled "Living for Kicks" in the United States).

"The James Bond movies came because we were successful in the pop music world, with a couple of big instrumental hits. They thought I knew how to write instrumental hit music," Barry said in an interview with The Associated Press in 1991.

In an interview in 2008 with The Irish Times, Barry said his success "was not that difficult."

"If you hit the right formula, if you have an instinct for music, if you apply it, if you have the good fortune to meet with certain people who teach you well ... I didn't find it all that difficult," he said.

Mr. Barry was divorced three times. He is survived by his |wife Laurie, his four children and five grandchildren. A private funeral was planned, the family said.

My sincere sympathy to the family of John Barry. It is indeed a sad day for all who loved him through his beautiful scores.
I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to rehearse and conduct "Somewhere in Time" with the Dagenham Crusaders of London in Scotland in 1985.
The deafening standing ovation was most fitting for this sensitive loving composistion.
Mr. Barry, You shall always be with us "Somewhere in Time"

Dear John Barry,

I can't believe that you died. You were one of my favorite composers of all time. Your score to Out of Africa, Born Free, The Lion in Winter, and Dances with Wolves are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. You rank right up there with Max Steiner as one of the best composers of all time. Your death has saddened me beyond words. It was the same sadness I felt when Jean Simmons died last year. Shock and sadness. I send my condolences to your family and may God comfort your family at this time. Rest in peace.

This man brought endless inspiration to me. If it was not for his spiritual understanding of the mind, heart and pure beauty of life, I would have not appreciated life as fully as I do now. As I write this, his sounds haunt me. Sorrows lifted by natures grace that someday we might understand as well as John did.

Carry on John, your soul's beauty will live in eternity.

The world has lost a great song writer. I'm so sad that John has passed. Though I never met him, I have enjoyed his music for a long time. I've seen many movies not knowing that he had done the score but as soon as the music started I knew it was his. There is a sound in his music that just fills my heart. He will surely be missed. I am so sorry that I was never able to tell Mr Barry how much his music has meant to me for so many years! I always recognized his music... my heart would know it was his music! The soundtrack to "Somewhere In Time" has been a huge part of my life. We played it for my father when he was in intensive care and the nurses thanked us for helping to calm all of the patients. My husband and I visited Mackinac Island with this music as our accompaniment. My sisters and I played it when we took road trips. It is to be played at my funeral!
Mr. Barry wrote music that was heartfelt and meaningful. He was a very creative and talented man!
I send my deepest sympathies to his family and may it help to know that the world is grieving with you!
God bless!

To the Family & Friends of John Barry,
The world has lost a true musical genius. His music graces my collection of film scores and I listen to it often. The movies that he scored would not be the same films without Mr. Barry's wonderful contributions. My Thoughts and prayers are with you at this very sad time, but know that his marvelous legacy will live as long as the movies he scored survive. His music is perfection and the film and music industries have lost a great man.

What an amazing talent John was. It is facinating to learn about the man behind such memorable musical movie soundtracks. May the words at Revelation 21:4 bring your family comfort. Ever since hearing Goldfinger at the age of 11, John Barry became my favorite film composer of all time. While every one of the Bond themes are tremendous, there was no mistaking the Barry touch with all the other compositions. Gratefully, he previously overcame a serious illness some years ago that enabled him to further receive honors and recognition including the BAFTA Lifetime award. Good sir, Bless you for the joy your music has and will continue to bring us. We will miss you.

I always hoped to have the opportunity see John in concert and hear the orchestra live...I love everything he did with the James Bond scores, Somewhere in Time, Body Heat, and The Specialist for the sensuous sounds they evoke time and time again...I have listened to his music since 1964 at age 11 and still find it fresh and new to my ears...No one has ever mastered the style & sound of music that he brought to each of these movies, TV shows, etc
It could only have been John Barry!

Having been introduced to John Barry's music as a pre-teen in the mid-1960s, he is easily my favorite of any film composer working during my lifetime..Lush, lovely melodies. His best score was SOMEWHERE IN TIME - what genius to pair his own music with that of Rachmaninoff!!! And when my cell-phone rings, there's Shirley Bassey belting "Goldfinger." Mr. Barry will be missed, but the music lives on.
