A Mass for township resident Richard C. Wolffe will be offered Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Ave., Short Hills.

Visitation for family and friends will be held Monday, Jan. 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Ave., Maplewood.

Mr. Wolffe, 85, died Jan. 5 at his home.

Born and raised in Montclair, he lived in Millburn. He graduated from Montclair Academy and attended Columbia University. Mr. Wolffe served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and served with Occupation of Japan after World War II and in the Korean Conflict. He earned several commendations, including a Bronze Service Star.

Upon Mr. Wolffe's return from Korea, he worked as a real estate broker and developer for more than r 45 years and maintained an office in Newark.

He developed 1 Washington Park in Newark, which opened in 1982 and marked the beginning of Newark's Renaissance. The office tower was the first major project in Newark since the opening of 550 Broad St. in 1966.

He volunteered his time in many community service roles. He served as a trustee and president of the Ward Homestead (Winchester Gardens) in Maplewood, the advisory board of Mary Baldwin College and Christ Church Hospital in Jersey City.

In 2008, in recognition of his personal service, he was bestowed with the Papal Order of St. Gregory the Great by Pope Benedict XVI.

Mr. Wolffe is survived by his wife, Benita; five sons, Rick, Elliot, Wesley, Stuart and Scott; a daughter, Claire Carter; and 12 grandchildren.
