Leonard DUDLEY Obituary

Leonard Carroll Dudley, age 91, of North Vancouver, passed away peacefully with family by his side on April 26, 2021. Born in Vancouver and moving to West Vancouver in 1937, growing up during the Depression had a profound effect on Len. He helped support his family, holding part-time jobs including at Safeway, the local movie theatre, on a CPR ferry as an officer and as a "whistle-punk" supervising the loading of logging trucks on Vancouver Island. This strong work ethic stayed with him throughout his schooling and career. A UBC law graduate, he spent most of his 55 years practicing law with Paine Edmonds. Len was an inaugural graduate of Capilano University's Outdoor Recreation Program and spent many glorious weekends mountain climbing. An active volunteer, Len was a long-time soccer referee, Scout leader and legal counsel for Scouts Canada for 35 years, and a dedicated participant in the Salvation Army's Pro Bono program, offering legal advice on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Len's commitment to community also extended to his being a frequent blood donor. He was predeceased by his wife, Lorna K. Dudley (nee McPhedrain), and parents Leonard C. Dudley and Eluned S. Dudley (nee Jones). Survived by his sons: Alan (Andrea), Brian (Cristy), and Darrell (Debbie); grandchildren: Tessa (Nicholas), Tamara, Ariana, Kayla, Serena and Earlene, and great- grandson Oliver. The family is grateful to North Shore Hospice and Lions Gate Hospital for their exceptional care and to Debbie Fryers for her long-term service to our parents. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the North Shore Hospice through the LGH Foundation.

I am so sorry about "Mr. Dudley" as I knew him. I worked for him in the early 70s. He was such a good boss and treated me like family. Allan wanted to go for a police car ride so my husband made that happen.

When I first returned to Vancouver as a young single mother, Mr. Dudley took a chance on hiring and training me. He was a wonderful man, very caring and generous with his time and knowledge. He started me off in my career as a legal assistant and when I left Paine Edmonds he was always available as a mentor. My sincerest condolences to the family.

Len was a lawyer's lawyer. I first met Len in the early 80's when I worked with my father downtown. Len was a regular at the Pepper Mill Restaurant at Pender and Seymour. I always was in contact with Len though out my career. He was a great source of practical legal advice to a young lawyer. Once Len retired I use to have lunch with twice a year until he became ill. He was a great sounding board and helped a young lawyer (hopefully) become a better lawyer. Law is a stressful business. A wise lawyer like Len always put issues into balance. He was wonderful mentor to me.

Len was a wonderful person and lawyer. He left the legal profession and the world a better place.

Len practiced law for many years but even after retirement remained keenly interested in it. Over coffee or tea he and I would discuss recent developments in law and in my mediation practice.
He came to church by himself early to listen to the choir prepare for the service and he told me he was often moved by what he heard.
A dignified and classy man, he is missed by many.

Len was such a gentleman, and beloved supporter of our church’s worship team for many years coming early to hear us practice. His smile is the best because it would light up his whole face! We will miss him so very much and look forward to an opportunity to celebrate him when we can do so. Prayers for comfort and peace for all of the family at this very difficult time.
