Mary Susan "Sue" Miller HAMMOND, IN - (November 13, 1949 - June 8, 2018) Beloved sister of Roy (Phyllis) Miller III, Sara (Chuck) Miller Holley, Holly Miller, and Joan (David) Petras. Devoted partner and friend of Diane Anton for over 40 years. Much loved aunt of Suzi (Mark) Makowski, Sara Miller Reno, Colin Howat, John (Gil) Howat, Juliann Courtney, and Sam and John Petras. Great aunt to Charlotte, Matthew, Allison, Brady, Cole, Lulu, Mia, and Ben. Beloved niece of her aunt, Mary Shores. Adored by her many cousins and friends. Preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Helen Miller. A Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at BOCKEN FUNERAL HOME, 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond (Hessville). Memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. John P. Kowalczyk officiating. Inurnment will follow at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery in Hammond. Sue was a graduate of Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Donald E. Gavit High School and Purdue University (BA and MA). Sue's lifelong love of literature and reading led her to become a teacher. She began her teaching career at George Rogers Clark High School, then Scott Middle School where she taught language arts and coached volleyball and basketball. She then taught at Kahler Middle School and finally Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in Calumet City. She was a member of the Lake County Retired Teachers Association. Sue was instrumental in establishing the Reading Recovery program at her last school and was fiercely committed to the students she taught throughout her teaching career. After retiring from teaching, Sue enjoyed traveling, riding her horses at her cousin Allison's farm, playing her ukulele, and spending time with her friends and family. Despite her many health problems, Sue never lost her desire to live life to the fullest. She dearly loved her parents, her partner Diane, her brother and sisters and their families, her Aunt Mary, her cousins and friends; and she was profoundly grateful for their love and support. Sue was known for her great sense of humor, but most of all for her loving heart. She was always more concerned about others then she was about herself. We will miss her terribly knowing that there will never be another Sue. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to St. Michael the Archangel Church Building Fund or the charity of your choice. I have known Sue and Diane since I was a child and have had the pleasure of treating her in physical therapy recently. Sue has always been so positive and upbeat, despite all her pain. She is an incredible person who will be missed by many! My deepest sympathy to the family! I am so sorry I was not able to make it this weekend due to being out of town. You were in my thoughts and prayers! My mom and dad wanted to make sure I let you know they are sending their thoughts and prayers as well!

Sue and became dear friends in the early 1970's when she taught briefly at Clark High School. We stayed connected through the years after I joined the Air Force and moved from the region. Eventually we lost touch. She was a dear friend and my heart was heavy when I saw the news. I am so grateful that I had the honor to call Sue my close friend. Rest In Peace, Sue. You will be sorely missed.

Sue and I were young teaching partners in the early 80's when she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Although Sue lived with pain and extraordinary challenges for the past 35 years, she continued to love and care deeply for Diane, her family, friends, and students. Our family was blessed to know Sue, who treated our children like her own nieces and nephews. We will miss you, Sue, but will remain forever grateful for all the ways you brightened our lives.

Miss Miller was my teacher and my volleyball coach at Kahler. I will always remember her fondly.

Sue Miller, I will always remember you with your ever-present, beautiful smile and your unwavering joie de vie. Mother Theresa once said, "Let no one come to you without leaving better or happier." Sue, I always felt better and happier after seeing you. May you rest in true peace. Thank you.
