It is late, Caryl. I have been thinking of you and the lack of contact. Two years ago Lalo died with a long illness caused by small strokes.I wanted to let you know and finally found that you lost Horton.I remember both of you a lot, besides our New York visits but also how close we were in New Orleans. Horton was such a great person! We saw him last unexpectedly at the Met, probably on our last trip to the city, and music , you and my father!.Please accept my condolencesLove Liliana Schor

I am deeply saddened to learn that Horton is gone. This sentence from his obituary:
"He will be remembered for his creative imagination, his curiosity and many enthusiasms, his gift for teaching, his love of music, his wisdom and his warmth."
together with the previous tributes here sum up my own fond memories of Horton, but I will add two more attributes: his selflessness and humility. In all of the occasions I spent with him and dear Caryl, I don't recall ever hearing mention of the broad and distinguished career of which I read only now in the obituary. While it come as no surprise in hindsight given his keen intellect and widespread interests, his focus and interest was always on his company of the moment, never on himself. A remarkable and all too rare model for a life well-lived that I will remember always and hope to pass on to my young daughter.
Horton's passing leaves a great gap, but I am exceedingly grateful that he touched my life. I will carry his lessons with me forever.
Sincerely,
Robert Yamins

I greatly admired my father-in-law Horton Johnson and valued his friendship, humor, intellect, and warmth. I think of him often, including "now how would Horton see or solve this?" We will all always dearly miss him.

Horton was a warm and accessible intellectual of the highest order, always eager to share his knowledge and expand the range of my curiosity. For several years we were guides together of the Musical Instruments collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and I consider his friendship one of the high points of my volunteerism.
May happy memories of times he shared with his dear wife, Carol, replace sad ones of recent days.
Sincerely,
