JOHN EDSALL Obituary

EDSALL--John Rupert, died Saturday, July 2, 2016 at the age of 91. He is mourned by Peggy, his beloved wife of sixty years, his children, Mary Agnes, Margaret Mary, John Francis, and Thomas More. He was predeceased by his daughter, Anne Marie. Born in London, John studied medicine at Downing College, Cambridge, and Kings College Hospital, London. In 1954 he qualified as a pulmonologist and moved to New York, taking up residencies at Bellevue and Roosevelt Hospitals. He started in practice at Roosevelt but was eventually appointed Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Chest Division at Columbia Presbyterian, where he ended his career. In 1999 he was honored by the founding of the John Edsall-John Wood Asthma Center. The visitation is Wednesday, 6 July from 6-8pm at Chas. Peter Nagel, 352 E. 87th Street. His funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, 7 July, at 10am at St. Joseph's Church, 404 E. 87th Street. Donations may be made in his name to the Rogosin Institute, 505 East 70th St., New York, NY 10021.
