I met Norman when he was 83 years old at a bar in San Francisco. I was only 25 at the time. Within minutes we were ordering each other gin and tonics and discussing every topic that should not be discussed in a bar. He was so kind and generous that after telling him I was going to New Zealand in two months he gave me his business card and told me to email him and he will take care of the rest.
After a few email exchanges it was decided that he would pick me up. I honestly didn't think he would show. I arrived late on a Monday night to find him waiting at the arrival terminal with a big smile. He had one hand behind his back, shook my hand with another and then revealed a six pack of Tui which he gave to me in the terminal. A proper New Zealand welcome.
He shared all of the contacts he had to make my travels throughout the country easy and unique. After 9 months of solo traveling the entire country I spent my last few days with Norm at his house in Mangawahi, drinking gin and tonics for lunch and wine for dinner. Oysters were consumed by the bucket and stories were shared.
Every time I think of my travels through NZ, I think of Norm. His hospitality, brutal honesty and genuine character made it that much better. I am grateful I met him and grateful for his time.
I hope you have a view, plenty of wine and a few dozen Oysters.
Cheers Norman!

So sorry to read this , we caught up with Norm after spying his Lodore number plate parked at Mangawhai which he gifted to us when he could no longer drive. We enjoyed his emails , opinions and meeting him and his family for lunch on the Auckland waterfront . He spent time in his youth on what is now our farm and enjoyed the catch ups. Rest in peace Norm .

Norm
The evenings we Wharf cops spent playing cards and having a surreptitious grog instead of walking the beat.
Caltex forever.
You were one son of a gun, mate.

Norman, our dearest and first friend in New Zealand.
You received us, this family of four arriving from Brazil, with wide open arms and warm heart.
Loved by young and old, we will always remember your voice, your cheeky smile and enormous zest for life.

I am so sorry for your loss. You shared him with so many people, who all have many wonderful memories of Norm's influence and impact in their lives. He was so loved by my late brother John Ramsay, and their great friend Jonathan Gibbs. As the boys would say see you Sport'. Love and thoughts Trisha
