Dearest Craig and Jabara family members,
We always called him Sam.
In 1962, my aunt, Elsie Kelly was a friend of Sam's mother, Catherine Craig. It was their friendship that introduced me to young Sam Craig, as he too was soon-to-be another new freshman at St.Gregory's Catholic High School in Shawnee, OK. Shortly after meeting Sam, I met his mother Catherine, his "very pretty" older sister Charlene, and his quiet little brother, Steve. At that time, my parents were still living in Arizona and deep down, I felt lonely and anxious. But meeting Sam made my life a whole lot better when he became my first friend in Oklahoma. Sam was a year older and nearly a head taller than most freshman and he always protected the rest of us. He also seemed to be the only one in the group with "common sense." In 1963, as sophomores, Sam and I, won many tournaments as acting partners in both Dramatic and Humorous Duet Acting Competitions as members of the St. Gregory's Speech Team. During a tournament that year, we were sitting together at Phillips University in Enid when a young actress rushed into the room shouting. "The president has been shot!" We thought it was a new cutting from some unknown Abraham Lincoln play. But it wasn't theater. That was the afternoon we learned that President Kennedy had just been assassinated in Dallas. I was reunited with Sam recently at the "St. Gregory's One Hundred Year High School Reunion" and since them, we visited by phone when he could safely chat during his taxi/uber shifts. As everyone knows, Sam was a natural born salesman and he put his talent to work for many years to support his family. May Our Loving God tenderly touch each of you with His gentlest mercy at your loss of "good Sam." John Hendrix
