Mary Elizabeth 'Marybeth' Wikander
Jan. 4, 1990 - Dec. 28, 2020
Marybeth was the youngest of four children and the only daughter completing Carroll and Teresa Wikander's Family. Marybeth grew up in Aloha, Ore. She is a graduate of St. Cecilia's Grade School and Valley Catholic High School. During her time at Valley Catholic Marybeth was a Volleyball four year letterman, as well as two time captain. She was first team all-state and two time MVP while playing for the Valiants. This dedication to volleyball earned Marybeth a scholarship to the University of Alaska, Fairbanks to play for the Nanooks. Marybeth quickly fell in love with Alaska and its outdoor beauty as she remained there after college where she pursued her career as a Geologist. Marybeth's love of rocks earned her a nomination as a Top 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining 2020. Marybeth was one of the hardest working women out there, never taking shortcuts, encouraging those in her daily life to perform at their top potential, and achieving success in all she touched. Always up for an outdoor adventure or new challenge, Marybeth would quickly include anyone who wanted to join in. She was loved by all in her community and life she had built in Fox, Alaska with her partner Seth and their three dogs. She had an infinite amount of love for her family and friends, always being the first to lend a hand. Marybeth had an abundant amount of joy and energy that was contagious to be around, especially to her nieces and nephews with whom she shared a special bond. Marybeth is survived by her partner, Seth; and their three dogs, Father (Carroll) and Mother (Teresa); brothers, Chad (Samantha), JC (Theresa), Jered (Melody), and half-sister, Ruth Stark (Ian); six nieces; and three nephews; as well as 18 Aunts and Uncles; and 29 cousins. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to Valley Catholic in Marybeth's name. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Beaverton, Ore. Services will be private. Dear Carroll, Teresa, and family,
We are shocked and saddened by the news of Marybeth's passing. You welcomed us into the neighborhood when we moved in, before Marybeth was born. Our kids played together and Marybeth gave our daughter one of her guinea pig babies. So sorry for your loss.

Marybeth was like family to me. We spent every day together (except summers but probably were still together most summers) from K-8th grade. After middle school, everyone kind of went their separate ways in high school. Our class was close... and always up to something together. But whenever we all caught up, it was like we didn’t skip a beat.

Wether our class was arguing over who chose Alex Kuedell first for dodgeball or planning our subway delivery lunches... or even NYE parties in my garage and lastly the Peter Palooza in 8th grade... we were all close.

Marybeth, I have so many great memories of you and with you. Thank you for being such a good friend growing up and good teammate.... volleyball and basketball... I have so many memories of my mom and your dad coaching us during basketball and us getting too competitive and our parents having to sit us out to talk to us. Haha.

You will forever be missed. And forever considered family. You and your family are in my thoughts....miss you.

Love,

Olivia

My heart aches for Marybeth and her family and friends. She was the warmest, kindest lady I had the pleasure of knowing. Playing volleyball with her are some of my favorite memories in high school and all I can think about is her infectious laugh and beautiful smile. I feel so honored I had one incredible chapter to share with her life and will always remember her silly goofy self. I love you Marybeth, and I can’t wait to meet you again someday.

Marybeth was truly a special person, and my day was always brightened whenever I got to see her. I will forever hold dear my early childhood memories of Teresa and her coming over with legos and being the best babysitters anyone could ask for. It is an incredible loss of such a special person, and I cannot imagine your grief. My love, thoughts, and prayers are with you and your family.

I loved playing volleyball with Mary Beth in high school. She was a great leader on such a young team. We looked to her for so much guidance and structure and she gave this and more to the team graciously. I have so so many memories that I could share, but there’s one that sticks with me to this day. I was the setter her senior year and we had so many plays, but volleyball is so dynamic that we would set up a play/route and then we’d also say ‘play it by ear’ and we’d both touch our ears as a symbol of that. That way we could make a change based off the play before and we’d both be ready. We had good communication on the court, so we were able to adapt plays well. I still find myself to this day touching me ear when discussing doing something on the fly or ‘playing it by ear with someone’.

We are big Nanook volleyball supporters and have gotten to know many of the players over the years including Marybeth. After many of the games we would get together with the players and bring snacks in support of them. We felt lucky that we got to know Marybeth and still saw her as she continued to live in Fairbanks. Our son played ultimate frisbee where he met Marybeth and they became friends which helped keep us in contact with her. We would ran into Marybeth and always enjoyed our visits with her. We loved her.

Love to your family,

I am saddened and heart-broken to learn of Mary Beth's passing. I had the pleasure and honor of spending my days with Mary Beth in my sixth grade classroom. She was the sweetest, loveliest, and hardest working student in the class. Her smile lit up the entire room. My heart goes out to all of you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

When I first met the Wikander family in 1989, as the new Principal at St. Cecilia School, Teresa was pregnant with Marybeth and, after three boys, she was praying for a daughter. And what an amazing daughter she had, but then with the family she was born into, I was not surprised. I remember an outgoing and joyful family and Marybeth was just the icing on their cake. I watched her grow from a tiny baby through to her high school years. She always, always had a happy smile and a twinkle in her eyes. She was truly a gift to our whole community. My heart goes out to the entire family, especially Teresa who I had a special bond with over the years. I cannot even imagine your grief at this time. God bless you all.

Oh man! I am so very, very sad. I had the privilege of teaching Marybeth at Valley Catholic and we shared a bond with St. Cecilia's in so many ways. She was a triumphant young woman with huge integrity, diligence, clarity of thought, sensitivity and humor...she always left a marked impression in a room when she entered. All of my prayers.
