Perlot, Mathew Murray 76 April 05, 1936 Oct. 05, 2012 Mat Perlot, 76, of Scottsdale, Ariz., was born in Portland and was raised in Portland and Welches. He served in the Army as an MP and paratrooper. After an honorary discharge he worked for Thurlow Glove Company and then Columbia Sportswear as a production supervisor. In 1968 he left Portland to start his own outdoor clothing manufacturing company. After getting Western Trails established in Bend, he left the garment business for the recreational vehicle business. He started with Beaver coaches then Monaco and Country Coaches as the marketing manager. He then went out on his own and started Safari Motor Coaches. Safari Motor Coaches eventually became SMC Corporation and included Beaver Coaches and Harney Coach Works. He also established Silver Creek Ranches of Oregon, LLC in Riley, where he ran cattle and grew alfalfa. Mat is survived by Connie Perlot; sisters, Marianne, Leila and Susan; brother, Jerry. He had four sons from first wife, Mary Ann (Bernert). Sons, Mike (Kathy), David, Gordon and Martin (Myra); grandchildren, Chris, Robert, Taylor, Danielle, Peter, Molly, Greg, Little Mat, Justin, Brianna and Shay. Mat was preceded in death by his father, Leonard; mother, Muriel; and sister, Jan. In retirement Mat lived in Arizona and spent time in Mexico and Alaska where he would entertain friends and family on his fishing boat. He was always orchestrating the next great fishing adventure. Through his long stay at the hospital at the end of his life, he was jovial and doing his best to entertain visitors. Mat was always very giving. He paid for the college education of several of his employee's children on the ranch and in Mexico and was a generous entertainer. Memorial services will be Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, 11 a.m. at Niswonger-Reynolds Funeral Home in Bend. More information and guest book can be found at gatewaylittlechapel.com. The family wishes any donations be made to Wounded Warriors. Mat's fish camp is closed. We will miss it very much.

Our 2430 1995 Trek changed our lives immeasurably and our 2007 is a dream and envy of many. The travels and friends made along the way are priceless, all thanks to a new way to travel! We have never towed, no need. Thanks Matt for your wonderful bed idea that made the Trek unique. Will never forget the delicious steaks you grilled for us at the great rallies. God bless the Safari family for making it all possible.

I remember Matt showing Herb, Mike J., Jim H. I believe and myself his initial "set-up", in a warehouse that is know part of Bi_Mart, I think. Was a wet, cold windy night & I remember thinking "this guy has some big ideas!" Was in '85 or '86 I think. My mind was on Guaranty's Used Truck Lot I was getting started. I did not see or understand the potential, let alone the looming business explosion, just around the corner. Matt not only understood, he created it, took advantage of it and walked away a true winner.

Matt hired me at Western Trails in the late 70's while I was still a college student. It was my first real job opportunity and I learned a lot from him. It was the break that launched my career. He was always gracious and supportive. He will be remembered. My sympathies to the family.
