Michael Ray Butts
June 3, 1952 - March 29, 2020
Michael was born June 3, 1952, and died unexpectedly March 29, 2020. Mike grew up in New Jersey, but spent the last 38 years in Portland.
At age 3 he taught himself to read using "Motor Trend" as his primer. Some years later, Mike began disassembling his mother's appliances to see how they worked, but it was when he started tinkering with the family television that his father, an engineer, took Mike in hand and taught him how to build radios and stereo equipment. Eventually Mike went to MIT where he earned a BS in electrical engineering and an MS in electrical engineering and computer science. Michael spent his entire career in computer innovation and architecture. Over the years he was issued 36 U.S. patents, and was recognized internationally as a teacher and a speaker. Mike was a beloved husband and a great father. He loved music, books and film. He was brilliant, kind, funny and uncommonly generous with his enthusiasms. We profoundly miss him.

Very sad to hear that Mike passed away. He was a very nice person, always willing to help. I met Mike in 1998 when he was working for Quickturn. Later we both worked in Cadence. He gave me a strong recommendation letter when I applied for a faculty position in 2003. I last met Mike in 2016 in Monterey. He will be greatly missed by all his friends and colleagues. May his soul rest in peace.

I was saddened to hear of Mike's passing. I worked for him a long time ago, but I still remember him fondly. He was super smart, kind, helpful and all sorts of other good qualities. My condolences to his family.

I knew Michael only slightly, but I was impressed by his kindness and gentlemanly nature. He will be missed.

I worked with Mike at FPS, Synopsys and Ambric. He was a great engineer and a caring, compassionate person.

We was the first person I knew to drive a hybrid vehicle and wanted to educate the masses about their virtues as he was concerned about the environment and the future of the planet.

I will miss him. My condolences to his family.

I have great memories of working with Mike long ago at FPS, Synergy, and Mentor. Although he was only a few years older than me, he was a great mentor and a better friend. I learned a lot from him. I miss you, Mike.
