A Salute and Tribute to a Great Man, our father :
Dad was raised by great parents, Robert Hugh Mercer and Jessie McLelland Mercer, with his sister Janet Ross, The family had moved to Coos Bay, Oregon from the Midwest about 1910 at the invitation of their great lifelong friends, the Symons family. Robert Hugh was employed by the US Forest Service in Oregon so the family moved with his job almost every year, so dad attended a new school annually.

At Jefferson HS, dad met the love of his life, Winnie Carlock and they went on to attend college together at Lewis and Clark College. They were married March 17, 1952, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, and dad then joined the US Air Force as a Sergeant, and served in the Korean War. He returned to finish college at Lewis and Clark with mom, and finish Law School at Northwestern, there as well. Mom graduated with a degree in music and began a lifelong career of teaching classical piano. They were inseparable and celebrated 68 years of marriage this year. They kept a wide circle of friends from high school and college and Westminster Church where they served in the choir for decades and hosted the weekly social after choir practice. Dad also served as an elder, for many years. Dad practiced law his entire life until retiring. In the 1980's he and mom and my brother Rob, started the Cape Meares Oyster Co in Tillamook Bay and Wheeler, OR, which was where dad truly loved to work, on a boat in Tillamook Bay, while living at Rockaway Beach.

Dad loved to fish, hunt ducks and deer, and took his
sons on those many adventures together. He was a great father to Stewart, Rob and I, and did everything with us. Family was the most important thing to dad. In his last months with us, he always said, "I am so proud of my family". He loved his greater family as well, and always cared deeply about the well being of his sister Janet and her children.

Dad is survived by his wife Winnie, his 3 sons, Rob (Virginia), Stewart (Cathi); Doug (Stacy). 6 grandchildren and 2 great grand children.

We love you and miss you dad, and look forward to seeing you in Heaven with Jesus.
