Wanda (Gossage) Phipps
Oct. 18, 1927 - Sept. 2, 2020
Wanda Phipps was born Wanda Lee Gossage, Oct. 18, 1927 in Bellingham, Wash., to Osco "Jack" and Emma Pierce Gossage. She died of natural causes at the age of 92 in Tigard, Ore.
Wanda graduated from Bellingham High School in 1945, the year that signified the end of WWII. Being an excellent student with exquisite penmanship she was offered a four year scholarship to Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., receiving her Bachelor's Degree in 1949. Her degree helped her pursue a teaching position at Vernonia High School as a Home Economics and Social Studies instructor. After two years of teaching she accepted a position with the OSU Extension Service as a county extension agent. She served in the counties of Curry, Grant, Benton, Umatilla and finally in Multnomah County where she specialized in nutrition for low income and immigrant families. She retired from her work with the Extension Service after 20 years in 1989.
When working in Curry County she met and began a long distance relationship with Frank Phipps who was on leave from the Navy. They nurtured their relationship by writing many letters to each other during his enlistment. One letter included a proposal for marriage, of which Wanda replied, "Yes!" They were married in Bellingham, Wash., June 7, 1952 and began a life together that lasted until Frank's death in 2019.
Wanda and Frank lived in John Day, Corvallis, Pendleton, Tigard and McMinnville during their 67 years. They brought three children into the world, followed by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Wanda was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, friend and employee. She was an excellent home maker, cooking wonderful meals, preserving food, sewing clothes and keeping the finances in order. She put a very high importance on education, enabling all three children to attend college without debt and helping them get started with their first homes. She made her faith in Christ a priority for herself and her family. She challenged herself and others to read and discuss the teachings of Jesus. Her Forum group at Calvin Presbyterian became a vehicle for a strong faith and she found comfort in the gift of eternal life, especially during her final years.
We are all blessed by having been a part of her life. Wanda was preceded in death by her brother, Glen Gossage; and husband, Frank. She leaves her legacy through her children, Lou Ann and husband, John Mergl, Cindy and husband, Mark Marchese and David and Tracy Phipps; grandchildren, Kelli, Jennifer, Crystal, Joseph, Dominic, Andrew, Adam and Henry; and great-grandchildren, Kiera, Evan, Emma, Vincent and Luca. "A Good Life - Well Lived."
A live-streamed memorial celebration will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020, at Calvin Presbyterian Church. Friends and family are invited to participate in the live-stream by visiting the YouTube channel for Calvin Presbyterian Church Tigard, Ore.

I knew Wanda when she worked as the Extension Home Economist and supervisor of the EFNEP program in Multnomah County. She was well loved by her EFNEP paraprofessional staff and respected as a leader in community nutrition education. She was a mentor to me as a young Extension Agent and I will always remember her for her helpful advise, positive attitude, and that contagious smile. Wishing my heartfelt sympathy to the entire Phipps family.

Aunt Wanda will be dearly missed. She was so gracious and caring and such a good cook. Chris also was fortunate to share her same birthdate, just a few years separated.

She was a great friend, inspirational and spiritual supporter for me and many others. I enjoyed my relationship helping both Wanda and Frank
with several everyday things that needed to be done. To all of her children Cindy, David and Lou Ann as well as the many other family members my deepest sympathy to you all. May they both rest in peace together with God's love and blessings always and forever. Many memories. As my husband, "Dave" would say to her every time "Wandu" you are one special person when is the next fried oyster dinner!

Wanda and family were our neighbors in Pendleton. She was a warm and wonderful friend and neighbor. We have lots of fond memories of visiting your house and going to church and school together. We are sorry for the loss of your dear mother.

I knew Wanda both when she was an Extension Agent and as a member of Columbia Home Economists in Home and Community. She knew about many things as was very generous in sharing information. Her family was blessed to have her.

Wanda held cooking demonstrations at Portland General Electric in the early 1960's when I worked there as a Steno in the Stenographic Dept. I'm sure I still have some of her recipes.
