MURRAY, Bryan Clarence
December 5, 1942 – August 12, 2017
Proud and caring Father.
Devoted Grandfather.
Prince Charming to his Snow White.
Son, brother, uncle, coach, teacher, mentor, neighbour, friend.
Bryan left the Ottawa Valley for a time but the Valley never left him. Growing up in a large family in a small town shaped him - hard working, caring, unassuming, loyal, honest and generous to a fault. There are countless stories of his donations of time and fundraising items for various worthy causes, many of which never made the news. This was done out of genuine concern for others, not for personal glory or public recognition.
Encouragement and wisdom, sometimes delivered in four letter words and always with great wit, left no doubt where you stood with Bryan. He had a knack for telling it like it is. Anyone sensitive to sarcasm was well advised to wear protective covering, including helmet and jock strap.
Despite rubbing elbows with famous people, Bryan never let life in the public eye swell his head. He remained humble and kind – well except for that one incident in 2007 when he stood on the boards and exchanged expletives with Lindy Ruff.
Bryan was equally at ease in the Chateau Frontenac or the Ladysmith Hotel. He was extremely thankful for a career in hockey that wasn't a job but a way of life that allowed him to do what he loved for many decades. If you ever watched Bryan watching hockey (animated and hilarious) you've witnessed just how much he loved the game.
Survived, loved and always remembered by his wife, Geri (née Sutton), daughters Heide (Don Browning) and Brittany (Joe Grubb), and granddaughters Emma and Addie, all of Colorado.
Also survived by brothers Laird (Ellen and the late Sheila), Barrie (Sandra), Bill (Ann) and Terry (Linda), sisters Darleen (Bert), Lorraine (Basil), Laurie (Jerry), Karen (Terry) and Kim (Mike), brothers-in-law Don Sutton (Patricia), late Peter, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, plus extended families.
Predeceased by his parents, Clarence in 2005 and Rhoda (née Schwartz) in 2013.
Celebrating a life well lived, Bryan's passions were family and hockey and a little Willie Nelson thrown in.
Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Service for family and friends will be held in Shawville United Church, 410 Main St., Shawville, Quebec on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Canadian Tire Centre. We encourage family, friends, colleagues and the public to attend to honour Bryan's legacy. Please enter via the Gate 2 entrance.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Make a Wish Foundation, Shawville Recreation Association, DEBRA Canada (in honour of Jonathan Pitre), Jardins Éducatif du Pontiac or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
"I hope I'm remembered as a pretty good hockey guy who was a good person."

Bryan was quite the achiever. He had the wit of a David and coached his men to beat the Goliaths whomever they may be. But, above all, Bryan was a Super-Man. You will be missed, but never forgotten. Thanks for the opportunity and unforgettable memories. Paul Payer

Sincere sympathy to Geri, Heide, Brittany, Bryan's family and friends
I have enjoyed reading so many beautiful tributes for Bryan. He has been a dear friend since school, Teachers College, going to see games and just meeting him in Shawville. I have always been a Bryan Murray fan no matter which team he was associated with. If I called or e-mailed Bryan he kindly put our names on a list and we could go and meet players and speak with him. One night at a game I was cheering for Florida. After the game a man tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Lady, please tell me why you cheer for Florida". I told him that I cheer for Bryan Murray!. I have a scrap book of many photos and clippings. I was always so proud of Bryan and to be from Shawville, Bryan Murray's town. Bryan was always so humble and genuine. At our HS Reunion he did not stand up and brag about his success. He turned to two of his HS teachers and thanked them for encouraging him to attend Teachers College and play sports. He said he might never have been able to do what he did without their encouragement and the skills that he learned. Bryan said that thanks to them he enjoyed a wonderful life in the hockey world. May all of the wonderful memories you all hold help to sustain you as you mourn but celebrate a special man who influenced so many. RIP dear friend until we meet again. When a star twinkles we will remember the twinkle in your eye.

My deepest condolences to the extended Murray family, and to the entire community of Pontiac. Both Canada and the Pontiac lost one of its giants this week.

I'll never forget how willing Bryan was to provide his wisdom and advice when I was first elected as MP for Pontiac. We sat down for coffee in Shawville and he was so open, honest and strong of character. I love how he didn't mince words he just told it like he saw it. I will always remember the leadership advice he gave me, grounded in his Pontiac roots and his deep knowledge of our communities.

Bryan was passionate about youth and sports, and his legacy reflects just that.

I remember watching Bryan play hockey for the Smiths Falls Bears and having him to our house for a meal. He was a humble gentleman at an early age. I moved to Alberta and raised a family and in the early 80's I took my children to an Oilers game against Bryan's Capitals. After the game I met Terry, but it was Bryan who took the time to have a long chat with myself and my children. A true gentleman to the end. My prayers go out to the entire Murray family.

I met Bryan Murray in 2014 in the chemo ward at Queensway Carleton Hospital. My wife who has since passed away was getting chemo treatment for stage 4 cancer at the same time. I mentioned to my wife that I should go over and speak to Mr Murray. Her response was that I should leave him alone and let him get his treatment in peace. The nurse who was treating him said quite the contrary, that he would love to talk to me. So, needless to say I went over and introduced myself. I was delighted to learn in our conversation that he was down to earth, sincere and ready to face his disease head on. He also instilled the notion of taking things day to day and to enjoy every minute of life. I took this to heart and the last year spent with my wife was one of the best. Thank you for your advice Bryan. I admire your courage. To the Murray family, my sincere condolences from someone who has also lost a loved one to this disease.
