NETTIE B. SMITH
Nettie was born on December 10, 1923 in Burnet, Texas to George and Tempie Smith. She grew up in a loving Christian home and was one of 7 children.
She served in the army from 1944 - 1946 as an aerial photographer. Nettie moved to Riverside, CA after she was discharged from the army. She survived a research explosion in 1952 when she was 28 years old, losing her right leg and left eye.
In 1968, Nettie moved to Orange County and resided there until 2013. Despite her challenges that she was left with after the explosion, Nettie was involved in many clubs and organizations over the years which included membership in the hiking club and guitar group. She was also a valued member of the Braille Club for 20 years and became an avid swimmer. She enjoyed playing on a sightless shuffleboard team and loved playing bells in her church choir. She was the main singer in a group called "Nettie and the Rhythm Boys."
Nettie relocated to Rancho Mirage in 2013 to be closer to her niece, Wendy. She passed away on February 2, 2018 in her home surrounded by family and her beloved dog, Cricket. She was 94 years old.
Nettie is survived by her nieces, Cheri Smith (Bill), Cathie McCormick (Casey), Patti Tyree (George) and Debbie Moore (Harold). She is also survived by 9 great nieces and nephews and 12 great-great nieces and nephews.
We'd like to give a special thank you to her great niece, Wendy who provided Nettie with loving and exceptional care in Rancho Mirage and to her caregivers who cared for and loved her so much. We would also like to thank her great niece, Kim and family for opening up their home for Nettie's Celebration of Life.
Nettie was a wonderful and unique lady who inspired everyone she met. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
