STEPHEN DUANE CHAPMAN, 67, died Thursday of cancer in his home. He lived in Redlands 39 years. Mr. Chapman was born in Upland on Sept. 12, 1946. He lived in Ontario and Upland until his military service in 1965. He moved to Redlands in 1975. He worked at Kaiser Steel near Fontana starting in 1964 when he was 18, and except for his military service in the late '60s and a year at General Dynamics in Pomona in the early 1980s, worked there, most of the time in information technology, until he retired in 2012. By then it was called California Steel Industries. He retired as the systems analyst manager. Mr. Chapman attended Upland Elementary in Upland, and San Antonio and El Camino elementaries in Ontario; then Vina F. Danks Junior High School and Chaffey High School, both in Ontario. He graduated from the University of California, Riverside, in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in political science. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, from 1965 to 1968 as military intelligence, intercepting and translating Chinese radio communications. He was stationed in Danang for one tour and Taipei for the second. Mr. Chapman was a state delegate for the Democratic party, the president of the Redlands Area Democratic Club, and a member of the San Bernardino County Central Committee. In April, 2013 he and his wife, Dianne Landeros, were honored at the state convention as the Democrats of the Year (Region 16), primarily for transitioning the club into an active group, for get-out-the-vote efforts and building club membership. He opened his home every Thursday morning, serving coffee and breakfast, for anyone to join in discussions about politics or current events. He was a member of the Redlands Good Neighbor Coalition, the Redlands Sustainability Network, the Redlands Conservancy, Redlands Democracy for America and Inland Empire Common Cause; a board member of the Friends of Prospect Park; and he led Redlands Rebuild the American Dream. In addition to his wife, Mr. Chapman is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Toni and Doug Momberger of Redlands; his mother, Bonnie Maxine Chapman of Alta Loma; his sister, Sandy Chapman of Windsor; and his grandchildren, Hunter and Carlisle Momberger. Services will be May 18 at 1:00 p.m. at Redlands United Church of Christ, 168 Bellevue Ave., Redlands. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Friends of Prospect Park.
