VELIA MARIA JUAREZ VARELA Velia died peacefully in Arroyo Grande, CA on July 24, 2015 surrounded by love, family and friends. Velia was born in Buckeye, AZ on February 9, 1936 and lived most of her life in Corona, CA. She was known to many as Nena. Velia was a devoted mother and homemaker. She spent 17 years as a domestic engineer and 13 of those years as a room mom to her daughters classrooms at St. Edward Catholic School. She was employed in 1982 by the Corona Norco Unified District she then worked for the Department of Industrial Relation - Court of Appeals. In 1987, she worked for the California Franchise Tax Board, as a tax technician, where she retired from in 2003. Over the years her family home became the gathering place for friends and family. Hosting various events from slumber parties to weddings. She gathered praise for her tamales, menudo and lasagna. Velia was so blessed to be able to open her home to many family and friends over the years whether it was for a getaway or a get your act together time. She was blessed by God to be given the heroic task to raise two angels entrusted to her, Andy (Blanco) Rojo and Ray (Hester) Rojo whom she flooded with love. Velia has missed her boys deeply. Velia is survived by her youngest daughter, Melanie and son in law Thomas Rodriguez. She was preceded in death by her eldest daughter, Debbie (Varela-Lipari) Oberdank. also surviving Velia are five grandchildren, Nicole Lipari, Thomas Rodriguez, Dominique Rodriguez, Tarl (Seth) Jones, Joseph Rodriguez and four beautiful great-grandchildren Deeana, Logan, Kallie and Elias. Surviving siblings is Carmen Lopez and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, family, friends and her dear comadre Carmen Nunez. Her family would like to thank Dignity Hospice and express deep heartfelt gratitude to Graceful Living Care Facility where Velia was often referred to as the life of the party. At Graceful Living she received truly compassionate care from staff who quickly became family. She was treated with dignity, love and taught the art of a selfie. Viewing will be held at Thomas Miller Mortuary, Monday, 08/10 at 6:00- 8:00 PM with rosary at 6:30 PM and mass will be held on Tuesday, 08/11 at St. Edward Catholic Church at 11:00 AM in Corona.
