After a few years in the US Navy Seabees, George settled in Maine, where he practiced medicine for over 40 years. Belatedly, I just learned of George's passing in the Lebanon Valley College newsletter. Besides being LVC classmates, George and I were roommates for two years in the same fraternity. We enjoyed multiple steak Sunday dinners at my grandmother's home in Lebanon. I was the one who taught George how to shoot a shotgun and hunt birds. I was with him when he shot his first pheasant on Harvey Smith's farm and can still remember that vivid scene and George's ear-to-ear smile. I also remember his phone call to me during his Navy days, right after Kirksville, when he revealed he had learned how to hit quail. I was happy to learn he continued these pursuits afield.

Sadly we lost touch with each other over the years. It was bitter irony to learn of his daughter's Montana residence, not too far (in Montana miles) from where I retired. We could have enjoyed outings together after the wily trout and partridge.

George, I hope you are in a place where the birds are plentiful and the pinochle hands are favorable.
I won't reveal all the fraternity pranks we pulled, unless asked by your family, but my own grandson loves to hear them. Suffice it to say we never harmed anyone and never committed a major crime.

To George's family: I was sorry to learn, just the other day, of George's death. Nearly 68 years ago George and I entered the first grade of Herbert Hoover Elementary School. George was one of the first, if not the very first friends I made there. I greatly enjoyed our childhood friendship and have always looked back on it with great fondness. I well remember George from those days and I also remember, from visits to George's home, his parents and sister. The beautiful tribute movie about George, and the many, many testimonies to his nature and character that folks have posted only confirm what I knew all those years ago--that George was, indeed, a special person. While I am saddened by his passing, I give thanks that I was privileged to know him. May God's peace and blessings be with you as you continue to give thanks for George and his well-lived life. As a class-mate of George I remember him to be a friendly, calm guy who always looked and acted professionally. I feel sure he was a fine doctor and friend to many residents of the area. Our class is diminishing rapidly.

I am not sure where to start.....I was looking through old photos from when I was a baby. I was born March 23, 1944 and ran across many photos of George and I with our Moms and Dads. our parents were great friends during the war. I decided to goggle his name and was surprise to find who I thought was him and it was as one of the pictures in the video of his Mom holding him as a baby is a picture that I also have. I was very, very saddened to learn that you had lost him so recently. It has been many, many, many years since I last saw his family. If his Mom or Dad are still here would you just tell them that I asked about them and share their sorrow. I live in Arizona, my name was Patricia Alvord, and my Dad was Larney and Mom, Gladys. Dr Gardner was a gift to us all.....as a friend, family member, or physician. My thoughts have been with his family, his work family, and his patients. He continues to be in my thoughts daily......he was a wonderful man......full of compassion and love of life and family.
I will miss him more than words can say.....as a patient.....his gentle way along with that great personality and humor made my healthcare and visits a wonderful experience. He never judged and was open to listen to whatever my concerns were. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and patients. We lost a great man and healer but we gained so much in life by just being a part of his. Miss you Dr G. You will always be my doctor......

My most sincere condolences to Denise and Georges family; as well as his work family Erin and Denise. I had the pleasure of visiting the office as a pharmaceutical representative for over 25 years. He was wonderful to our industry and his patients! He created a wonderful and welcoming atmosphere for all who entered his many different offices. He was a rare physician in this world today, full of humor, heart and quick wit. My heart breaks for you all!

Dr. Garner was a wonderful physician, able to maintain a practice with loyal staff and a family atmosphere that was warm and welcoming to whomever came through his door. My heart was broken when I heard of his passing and my thoughts are with his wife, Denine, Erin and family. I remember seeing 13 wild turkeys in his parking lot,(I counted them and I made sure to tell him!) To this day when I see wild turkeys in abundance I think of Dr. Gardner, a special doctor, family man, great guy and person who loved the outdoors, always remembered with a smile. Tina

Dr. George, I began my practice about same time, diffenent kind of work although as had learned whether Dr. or lawyer if try to help people they will know that and will come back. Your and my Grandson Ben Irish played baseball together, the bonus am friends with his Dad. We'll miss You, know you left so many good memories with Family and Your Patients. Dick Cervizzi

No words can ease the pain of the loss of George. I'd like to share a few memories that I have; a few ways he touched our lives; how I remember George (until the last few years, I always referred to him as Dr. Gardner)...So many, many memories over the years, ranging from doctor's visits (removing a piece of glass from my foot when I was about 7 to immunizing both of my children when they were babies), attending family gatherings, hunting and fishing trips with my dad and many others. He had a great sense of humor. He almost always had a smile on his face, usually he was laughing. Only a very few times did I see him with a serious look. We are lucky to have known him. So many are fortunate to have known him. With love and affection, From Our Family

The news of Dr. Gardner's passing has left us stunned. We send our heartfelt sympathy to Denise and his entire family including, of course, Erin and Dineen. We were so blessed to have had him in our lives, if only for a short time compared to others who write their tributes. It was amazing how he did make you feel like you were his only patient and that he was there to help with all of life's issues. Knowing that he was there for us enabled us to live our lives to the fullest in spite of dealing with serious illness. We loved his welcoming, caring spirit, his sense of humor, and his lack of political correctness. He was the best family doctor we have ever had. May his family find comfort in their loss knowing that he made a difference in the lives of so many.

My heart is broken and can't believe it is true. The sadness I'm feeling not only for the loss in my heart but for the loss Denise, his sons, and Erin & Denine are experiencing. My heart breaks for you all as I know how important he was and how much you all loved each other. I saw Dr. G for almost 28 years and cannot comprehend what it is going to be like without this kind, gentle, funny, and extremely caring man in my life. He's touched so many people's lives. The memories will stay with me forever. From when helped me during some rough times (giving me tough love) to when he, Erin and Denine decided to make a pact to be nice to each other for the day...that didn't last long! That was probably one of the funniest visits I had ever had. I was much more comfortable with the bickering and Erin bossing the boss around! Dr. G, you are forever in my heart. I will miss you greatly!

Dr Gardner was my doctor for many years. He actually saved my life. I was on a medication that required monitioring through blood testing. The doctor who prescribed failed to continue monitoring. Dr. Gardener discovered kidney failure. Immediately halted the medicine. He gave me milestones with my family Have four grandchildren on top of the other four that I have. Rest In Peace and god bless you and family.

Dr. Gardner was my doctor for over 30 years. He was the only one that would see me when I was having heart problems in 1987. My husband Barry was his patient and friend also. They loved to talk about fishing and hunting. We are very heartbroken about his unexpected passing. R.I.P. Dr. Gardner. Our sympathies to his wife Denise, his sons, and his staff Denine and Erin.

I saw Dr. Gardner most of my life and my children saw him for years. He was more than a family doctor, it was more like going to see a friend. He was always there to listen and not judge, someone so comfortable to talk to. He will always be in my thoughts.

Dr. Gardner was the most empathetic, easy to talk to, smart, and friendly Doctor I have ever met. He helped me through some very difficult times and never gave up on me; instead he always had words of encouragement for me. When others would have given up on me, he held me accountable and practically held my hand as I made steps towards positive change. He took care of me during my entire first pregnancy, and was so kind, caring, and genuinely excited when my child was born. I always looked forward to my appointments with Dr Gardner. He always went the extra mile; being available to patients 24 hours a day and even assisting me when I was out of state. My prayers go out to his family, who I know he loved so much by the way he spoke of them. I am at a loss for words; THANK YOU DR GARDNER for being an amazing Doctor, mentor, and human being. YOU SAVED MY LIFE. The world needs more Doctors like you, and you will be sincerely missed by all of your patients, family, colleagues, and friends. The medical community has just lost one of its most caring practitioners. I don't even know how to process this loss, its just too sad, and normally I would be coming to discuss a loss like this with Dr. Gardner himself. Sending hope and prayers to all of his loved ones. May he rest in peace knowing how many people he helped and how well loved he was by all. <3

George Gardiner saved my life, he helped me and my family out so much. He helped get my fiance off of the substances she was on, and she has maintained sobriety for almost 3 years now. I'm going to miss him like crazy. He was more than just a Dr, more than just a counsellor, he was a friend. He was someone I could trust, someone that had Empathy and someone I told my Dreams to, then went out and accomplished those Dreams to become what I am today. I was with Dr Gardiner for almost 5 years and I'm going to miss him like crazy! My condolences go out to all his Family and friends. My heart breaks just thinking about him. I was excited to come see him whenenever I had my doctor appointment. He always made me smile, he would always tell a joke, he'll be the best Dr. I will forever have known, with the most sincere belief in yourself even if you are lacking it on your own. Dr Gardiner, I'm going to miss you and I pray your family has support in this time of need, like I did when I met you.
