On May 18, 2020, Tryon "Ty" Lamont Benner loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather joined his Lord. He passed peacefully at UPMC Harrisburg with family by his side. He was born Jan 15, 1928 at home in East Salem, PA to the late Ray "Poppy" and Mary "Ma" (Sausman) Benner. He graduated from Thompsontown Intermediate School in 1945. He served his country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WW II. He loved flying and earned his pilot's license. Using the GI Bill, he graduated from Elizabethtown College in 1952 in Secondary Education and lettered in Soccer. After college he taught high school Biology and coached soccer. He went on to further his education at Bucknell and Penn State to become a high school Guidance Counselor. Tryon established the Iron Mountain Orchard and a Fruit Market that later blossomed into Benner's Country Restaurant in Millerstown which he owned and operated for 40 years. Ty was also instrumental in the development of the Tuscanita Ski Resort in Thompsontown. In later years, he worked as a job coach/counselor for people with disabilities and refugee families. He then sold real estate and retired from Jack Gaughn. Ty had numerous other interests. He enjoyed music and singing, and participated in competitions as a member of the Keystone Capital Barbershop Chorus in Harrisburg for many years. Later he loved singing Kareoke. Ty was a founding member of the Thompsontown Lions Club, and previously attended Thompsontown Emmanuel Lutheran Church where he had served as a Sunday School Teacher and was a past member of the Church Council. He especially loved camping, boating and fishing at the bay with family and friends. He was very active and involved with his children, being one of the founding members and a coach for Pee Wee Football and Pee Wee Wrestling for eastern Juniata County. He also enjoyed attending sports to cheer on his children and most recently his grandchildren.
