Katherine Ann Groves
1923-2017
Katherine Ann Groves, nee Bushnell, a resident of Marietta, Georgia, formerly a long-time resident of Pensacola, Florida, was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on June 28, 1923, and passed away on November 24, 2017.
Kay, as she was called, was always fun-loving and vivacious. She met the love of her life, a handsome Navy Aviator, Albert Ray Groves, in 1946 in Washington, D.C. They were married in May 1947. Soon after marriage, Kay experienced the life of a Navy wife, following Ray as he was transferred to many different duty stations and aircraft carriers. Along the way, they had five children: Jeffrey, Daniel, Steven, Teresa and Katherine. After Ray retired from the Navy in 1969, they remained in Marietta, Georgia and, in 1979, moved to Pensacola, Florida. After 61 years of marriage, Ray predeceased Kay on May 27, 2008.
While living in Pensacola, Ray and Kay were active in, among other organizations, two Mardi-Gras Krewes, the Jazz Society of Pensacola, and the Naval Aviation Memorial Chapel on the Naval Air Station Pensacola. They were also volunteers at the Navy Hospital. After Ray's death, Kay continued as a volunteer at the Navy Hospital and the Veterans Administration Clinic.
Kay moved to Marietta, Georgia in 2013 in order to be closer to her children. She enjoyed her nine grandchildren: Severine, Bradley, Ian, Erin, Wesley, Andrew, Michael, Vaughn, and Liam; and her eight great-grandchildren: Camille, Felix, Briana, Bryn, Harriett, Ayden, Jackson and Connor.
She is survived by sons: Jeff Groves and wife, Harriett, Dan Groves and wife, Aline, Steve Groves and wife, Renae; daughters: Teresa Lind and husband, Steve, Katie Groves and husband, Jim McBrayer; nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service and an Inurnment at the Georgia National Cemetery will be for the immediate family at a future date.
