A toast to Aunt Betty who lived life well! An ardent advocate of education, books and the outdoors, I'll always remember her unflinching enthusiasm in the discovery of something new. Her insatiable appetite for learning rubbed off on those around her. While I confess I never attempted to read a dictionary cover to cover, her conversations often led me to a copy of National Geographic or a map detailing a part of the world she traveled. I'll always remember her late into the night conversations with my mother at Christmas.

Best of all, I'll always recall in fondness the kindness she extended when my father passed and shared a space to London and a vigorous hiking adventure in The White Mountains. To say I was lucky to have her take me under her wing for those weeks 30 years ago is an understatement. If anyone's interested, I kept a tape of the London trip and would love to share a copy. Yes, I realize there's probably a library's worth of travel scrapbook material that goes back at least 60 years!

Betty was lucky in her kids sharing all those great trips over the years.

As I said earlier this week, her passing is truly the end of an era for the whole family. Hopefully she realized all the lives she touched.
