Les Bell is one of those individuals that I know has a special place in heaven. He donated his life to helping others and giving to the community , I first met Les in 1989 and worked with him and his Optimist Club. In the many years of his service to the organization, he recruited over 50 members and served the community in more ways than can be counted. Capital-Virginia and Optimist International and the Optimist Club of Portsmouth finds a vacancy that will be extremely difficult to fill.

Just want to take a minute and express my condolences for a truly great man who will be missed beyond words. I played on the first gals basketball team he coached many years ago. He coached me till I started playing high school ball and then he still came to my games. When I turned eighteen he had me come back and coach with him. We did this for maybe fifteen years together. He was a part of my wedding, has spent Thanksgiving with my family, we talked all the time and here lately there's been a few visits to him at the hospital. This man is the epiphany of what a great coach is made of and just a down right good man. Thank you Mr. Bell for being both of those things along with also being an extra dad for me at times. There are no words that can express how much you are loved and will be missed. Say hi to mom for me. RIP
