Norman W. Simonelli
Virginia Beach - Norman W. Simonelli, 83, sailed away to the Lord on Dec. 3, 2013 surrounded by his family. He was born on Nov. 11, 1930 to Catherine and Octavius Simonelli in Mystic, CT.
He grew up in Mystic, where he was the class Vice Pres. all 4 yrs of high school. After graduation in 1948, he joined the Navy. He was a veteran, retiring as a Commander after serving 30 years on the USS Rodman, the USS Yosemite, the USS Perry, the USS Tidewater and many others, creating lifelong friends along the way. Upon retirement, he worked for the Navy as a civilian at SeaCor. He was the Commander of the Hugo A. Simonelli VFW Post in Mystic and the secretary for the Rodman and Yosemite, responsible for the newsletters and reunions.
Norman was a kind and generous man who cared about others, serving his community in many ways. He felt it was an honor and a privilege serving his country in the Navy. The Navy was as much a part of him as his family. He enjoyed woodworking, bowling, crabbing, the Redskins and his morning walks with Joe and Copper. He was thankful and grateful for his friends which he considered family. But his greatest and proudest achievement was his family which was the most important thing to him. He showed this on a daily basis through his love and selflessness.
He is survived by his wife of 54 yrs, Eleanor Simonelli, his sister Betty Pettini and husband, Don; 2 children, Mary Ellen Gagnon and husband Jim, Michael Simonelli and wife Kelley; 9 grandchildren, Steffanie Timpson and husband Eddye, Sara Burns, Scott Burns, Anthony Simonelli, Christopher Simonelli, Jena Gagnon and partner Faruk, Kali and husband Ryan, Kyle Gagnon , Joel Gagnon and partner Tasha; 7 great-grandchildren, Brooke-Lynn, Cameron, Rylee, Brody, Evren, Leyla and Ethan.
Friends will be received at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 1457 Independence Blvd, Va Bch, Sun., Dec. 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Mon., Dec. 9 at Hollomon - Brown at 11 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park on Witchduck Rd. I served as Executive Vice President of AMSEC during its first none years. The success we achieved as a company was because people of Norm's caliber honored us by joining our team. His expertise and leadership allowed AMSEC to provide outstanding services our our Navy while also making AMSEC a great place to work. I looked up to Norm. I am so sorry that your family has lost him for now. We will all be together again soon enough.
