Shirley Sweet
Virginia Beach - Shirley Ann Sweet, 69, of Virginia Beach, passed away the afternoon of January 3rd, 2018, after a sudden medical event. She was a loving and esteemed great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, wife, sister, and friend to many. She was known for her green thumb and nurturing kindness to even the tiniest of God's creatures. Anyone stopping by her home would be heart-warmed by her butterfly nursery and her inviting hospitality. Where many might see only landscaping to be avoided she saw a blank canvas whereby she would express her creative flair balanced by technical excellence. As her children, Crissy and Alan, grew and raised children of their own she was known as Grandma and Muga, eventually earning the distinct privilege of holding one of her great-grandchildren. Growing up in Livonia, Michigan she fell in love with the beauty of the outdoors and developed a love for fishing. The thrill of the catch was an enticement that led her to find herself elbow to elbow alongside weathered fishermen at the local pier or wobbly-legged on a charter boat. Shirley was a testimony that love can shine brightly and overcome, particularly when set against her quiet personal backdrop of adversity and trials. She had a peculiar knack for developing meaningful friendships easily with people from all walks of life as she harbored no judgment and found she could share in a person's grief and sorrow as readily as their happiness and celebration.
Shirley is survived by her husband, David; daughter, Crissy; son, Alan (Erin); sister, Sharon (Arley); grandchildren Connor (Kaitlyn), Kayla (Andrew), Hannah, Isabella, Samuel, Cora, and Leah; great-grandchildren Jaxson and Waverly; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Alexander and Helen Douglas, respectively.
A celebration of Shirley's life will be held on January 20th, 2018, between one and four in the afternoon at 3105 Quimby Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23452.

The few times I had seen Shirley, I knew that she was a very sweet and kind lady with the most beautiful smile. We both share a Grand daughter and I will always let Isabella know that she was loved by her. I will always cherish the Mint plant that she sent by Crissy to me and we had not even met at that time. My heart and prayers go out to all the loved ones and can assure you that there is a star shining a little brighter tonight. God Bless All.
