Betty Hays
EAST PEORIA - Betty Fox Hays, 92, of Virginia, IL, former resident of Concordia Village in Springfield and mother of an East Peoria resident, died on Sunday, June 28, 2020, at Walker Nursing Home.
She was born on Aug. 27, 1927, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Francis "Frank" and Edith Taylor Fox. She lived in Virginia, IL, for most of her life.
She is survived by one son and two daughters, Alan (Jennifer) Hays of East Peoria, Nancy (James) Hall of Springfield and Margaret (Ed) Germain of The Villages, Florida; ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and one brother, Merle (Mary) Fox of Jacksonville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Edith McCollister (surviving husband, Bob, of Jacksonville); and one sister, Eleanor Devlin.
She attended Iowa State University after high school. For many years until she retired, Betty worked as an insurance clerk/bookkeeper for several area doctors, including Drs. Dumonceaux, Beard, Vincent, Auner, Norbury and Kolmer. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Virginia, where she served as an Elder and a Deacon.
Her freezer was almost always full of cookies, which she shared generously with visitors, including her eager grandchildren. She was a member of the Walnut Grove Household Science Club. She treasured her circle of family and friends and nothing gave her more joy than inviting those family and friends to gather around her dining room table. She will be especially remembered for her kindness and her quiet service to her family, friends, church and the community she loved.
Due to the pandemic, a private family service will be held with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia.
Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church of Virginia or Walker Nursing Home Activity Fund.
The Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Virginia is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left at buchanancody.com.

My condolences to Alan, Nancy, and Margaret. It's been a long time since I've seen any of you, but know that you had a wonderful family because of your mom. My mom and her were good friends through school. I will never forget the first time I remember meeting her...... She brought cookies to our house in the country when my little brother was born. My mom told me that was her friend, "Wimp". She was very special to many people, including my mom. Memories will carry you through this tough time. Prayers going your way.

For many years the Riemanns were fortunate to have Betty as a neighbor and for even more years, as a friend. I have many good memories of her visits in our living room and of her surprise delicious homemade cookie "gifts" we found on the kitchen table after she had gone. I also remember her as the kind lady who gave me a summer job, which helped me earn money for college expenses and who also sent me celebratory flowers when I began my teaching career at the North School. It is clear to those who knew her, she was atune to finding opportunites to encourage and serve those around her-very admirable characteristics which blessed family and friends and obviously enriched her life in the process. Betty will be missed by her family and many friends whose lives she touched in her own special way. May God comfort her family and friends with His special love and peace at this difficult time and in the days to come.

Alan,Nancy and Margaret, So sorry for loss. Your mother was a quiet and wonderful lady. She and my dad were first cousins so I've known her all my life. Although we didn't see each other often I knew she would be there if needed because she was family. She will be missed greatly.

My deepest sympathy to the loved ones of Betty Hayes. I didn't know her very long. But long enough to know what a kind loving lady she was. I enjoyed visiting with her in the hallway and treasured her kisses on my hand. Hugs to my friend, Nancy Hall. I didn't realize this was your mother. Now I see from whom you got your sweet disposition. May your mom rest in peace. ❤

Alan, Nancy and Margie,
I will miss your mother so much. During both of my bouts with cancer, she was a trooper. She sent gifts, brought food for Tim and my son, Chris and sent letters of encouragement. I never went to Walkers to see her but I met with her in Concordia Village.... She always put others first and she was so soft spoken. She was a wonderful cook. Cookies....she was the one to start the cookie walk at the church. I even did my Christmas poem one year on the cookie walk and she is mentioned in getting it started.Take care and know that she has touched so many lives in this community. Beth Ann (Cox) Walton

My sincere sympathy to your families. I was fortunate to know this quiet, kind, unassuming lady that influenced much of what you are today. I remember the handmade Christmas gifts she made for me as Alan and Nancy's 5th grade teacher. She was an inspiration and good role model. Fondly, Judy Briggs

The town of Virginia, IL will SO miss Betty Hays. She was a friend to many & especially to Margie Brown these last few months. Mom (Margie) & Betty would hold hands in their rooms at Walker Nursing Home & chat about the past. Betty would show me the pictures of her Mother & Dad & tell me so many stories. I felt like I knew the Hays Family through Betty's stories. Our sympathy & prayers to all of you from Rich & Nancy Sapp

I will miss Granzie a great deal. I missed her when she moved to Springfield and now that she has passed to be with her family that has gone before her, I will miss her even more. She was a wonderful woman and like another Grandmother to me. She always supported me and encouraged me in activities I did at school and even bike a thon's . When I got older I started clearing her walkway for her in the winter. It is sad to hear of her passing. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones at this time.
