Elaine Stewart
Jan. 17, 1925 - Jan. 23, 2017
SOUTH BEND - Frances Elaine (Fleming) Stewart, affectionately known as “Elaine,” dearly beloved mother and matriarch of five generations, was called home to her Heavenly Father on Monday, January 23, 2017, in her home surrounded by her loving family.
Elaine was born January 17, 1925, in Parkersburg, WV, the sole child of Richard A. and Vivian V. (Campbell) Fleming. Her mother passed away when she was only one. Elaine was raised in Union, WV, until the age of six, when her father married Lucille Streets. Elaine was lovingly raised in this union.
The family later moved to South Bend, where Elaine graduated from Central High School. In 1943, in Hampton, VA, she was united in marriage to William W. Stewart. To this beautiful union six children were born: three sons, Robert A. Stewart, William W. Stewart, Jr., both of South Bend, IN, and Michael B. (Cynthia) Stewart of Elkhart, IN; three daughters, Deborah E. (Taffie) Mallard, Jacqueline McLeod (Sidney) Hunt and Karen (Kent) Jenkins, all of South Bend.
Elaine was a faithful member of St. Augustine Catholic Church for more than sixty years. During her lifetime, she was employed at Ball Band and The Huddle, but she most loved working in the Title One Program in the South Bend Community School Corporation.
She leaves to cherish her memory: six children, 23 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, and 63 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Wilma Frazier; and brother-in-law, Benjamin V. (Mary) Stewart; one nephew; and a host of friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, William W. Stewart, her parents, Richard (Lucille) Fleming, one brother-in-law, two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Special thanks to Center for Hospice Care and all friends and family who continually watched over her until her departure.
Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, January 29, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home - West Chapel, 2702 Lincolnway West, South Bend, IN, and from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 30, at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Elaine is my cousin and I hold wonderful memories of my childhood. She and my aunt Loucille would prepare vegetables for canning and freezing and us kids would shuck corn, unstring green beans and picke from the garden and weed. They had a special way of making it fun for us.... It was always a good time. Elaine is one of the sweetest ladies I've ever known.. Her soul so gentle.
