Fred Gillman Obituary

Gillman , Fred
Fred Gillman passed away peacefully on April 1, 2021, two months shy of his 100th birthday. Born in New Haven, June 7, 1921, he was the son of Abraham and Sadie (Sherman) Gillman. He is survived by Bernice, his loving wife of 50 years, brother Simeon (Toby), loving nieces and nephews, and was predeceased by his dear sister Lillian Tessler. Fred graduated Hillhouse High School and University of North Carolina. He served 4 years in WWII, attaining the rank of 1st lieutenant. His professional career brought him to NYC for 20 years, managing commercial properties. He returned to New Haven and was a partner in the family business, Abern Safety Equipment, retiring in 1983. An accomplished musician, he loved music, travel, tennis, art, and his poker pals. Fred had a quick wit, and was kind, humble, and the ultimate old-fashioned gentleman. Every day he will be missed. The family wishes to thank our dear friends Sharon Demetropoulos, Sharon Webb, and Joan Cinquino for their extraordinary help and care. Contributions in Fred's memory may be made to Jewish Family Service of New Haven, Hospice of Branford, or Temple Beth Sholom in Hamden. Funeral Services will be Private. The Robert E. Shure & Son Funeral Home is in care of Arrangements. To Watch the funeral service, sign an online registry book, or Leave a message of condolence, please log on to: www.shurefuneralhome.com.
