Mason Charles Shaffir 22, of Annapolis, died on September 21, 2017 at his home in Hillsmere Shores. He was born on February 4, 1995, the son of Gregory and Kimberlee (Van Newkirk) Shaffir. A native Annapolitan, he attended Hillsmere Elementary, Annapolis Middle and graduated from Annapolis High School in 2013, where he was a member of the cross-country team. He was also a third degree black belt at East Coast Martial Arts where he medaled in AAU National competitions. Mason is survived by his parents Greg and Kim of Annapolis and his sister Kira Shaffir of Windsor Mill. He also leaves his maternal grandparents, Charles and Norma Morris, also of Annapolis. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 1 at 2 pm at the Blue Heron Room in Quiet Waters Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating in his memory to The Mason Charles Shaffir Memorial Fund at the Maryland Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention or to the Annapolis SPCA.

To Mason's family and all his loved ones: Hearing about Mason's death in late September was so horribly saddening as well as shocking. He and I used to be boyfriend & girlfriend back when I was in 9th grade and he was in 10th. While we were so young at the time and grew apart afterwards, it has always remained evident to me how witty, insightful, and caring he was as a person. There are so many people who love him and know that he was a special individual. I've often wondered these past few years what he was up to or how life was going. Just now stumbling upon this online platform to reach out, I want to make sure I express my deepest condolences. I can't imagine the strength you each must hold to have been able to get through these difficult past few months.

Kira and Family,
Mason and I were some of the first to join the annapolis high frisbee squad, together with its founders, and we ran together on cross country as well. I'm devastated to hear about Mason, it cuts right to my core. I know our energies are one now, and that he'll live inside all of us.

Kim & family,
About five years ago, a vibrant, beautiful 21 year old young woman, who was our sons' favorite babysitter, took her own life. Losing Victoria was devastating for all of us, but initially her nuclear family chose not to disclose her death as a suicide. Her older sister did "confide" in me right away, wishing her parents would follow suit publicly. They did so after about two years, and now are active supporters of suicide prevention groups.
Your immediate disclosure of the nature of Mason's passing is brave and admirable, though I am certain it also is profoundly painful. Thank you for your dedication to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, signifying your compassion both for your Mason and all others who fall into this lonely state of despair. I offer you my deepest condolences and pray for Mason's peaceful, eternal rest.
Today's young people are made to mature way too quickly because of societal pressures. I am experiencing this with my 13 & 17 year old sons. Please be gentle with yourselves as you bear the unfathomable loss of your beloved son and brother. God bless you all.

You may not remember me - my sister Sarah was your neighbor. I used to watch my nieces and nephews often and Mason was a frequent guest. Although it's been many years, I remember him well. I usually asked him if he wanted to stay for dinner. He often said yes, and always offered to help. Not long ago, I saw a comment he made on social media. I looked him up and saw the beautiful jewelry he was making. What a talent! I'm sorry I lost touch with him. I'll be out of town for the celebration of his life, but I'll be thinking of you all.

I came across this obituary while sadly looking for a friend's son's obituary who had just passed over from a heroin overdose. This can be a very harsh world for young people. Although I don't know your family or Mason my heart goes out to you. What an incredibly handsome young man his was. Love that smile. Your disclosure of his passing in the obituary was done with dignity and bravery. No doubt these donations will help others in a very painful and difficult state of mind. Prayers, peace and deepest sympathy. Remember the blessings he brought to your life. He will watch over your family with grace and peace.

I was saddened to hear of the death of one of my former students. I was lucky to have been one of Mason's teachers for 9th grade and 11th grade. Mason Shaffir was always funny, respectful, intelligent, and insightful. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Mason will live on forever in our memories.

I did not know Mason Shaffir or his family. But it is very disturbing when a young person dies with so much life unlived. Of course, I heard about this on Face the Nation of September 24, 2017. I hope his family and Face the Nation share more of Mason Shaffir's story and thus possibly help others get through some personally tough times.

My heart grieves with you. So many young people are afflicted leaving their families broken. My son 24 is in a category of males that purports a very high risk of suicide. I have and continue to watch his unbalanced tightrope through young adulthood and the fear is real and constantly ever present. This is an epidemic. We need tolerance, love, and support all of which I pray is yours in this unimaginable maze you must face. Mom hugs to each of you. Jesus love please lift up and shine down hope.

My deepest sympathies on this extraordinary loss. I don't know you and I didn't know Mason. Heard of his death on "Face The Nation." More than likely you all are in a fog and disbelief of Mason's death. You will probably not ever remember this message. I don't really know what you are going through; I just know what I went through when I have lost loved ones. I just want you to know I'm praying for you all to find comfort and peace. This kind of loss is not easy. Please find groups or individual help. It's okay; you need to ask for help. Love to you all; people I've never met yet.
