Steve Romeo Obituary

Steve Romeo, 40, of Jackson, Wyoming, died in an avalanche in Grand Teton National Park on March 7, 2012.

Steve was born in Manchester, and graduated from East Catholic High School in 1989 and from Marist College in 1993. To follow his dream of skiing, he moved to Jackson Hole later that year and worked at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort ski area where he honed his skiing technique and style. He soon became fascinated with the world of backcountry skiing and competitive ski mountaineering. In addition to his pioneering backcountry ski descents, he was selected to be a member of the U.S. Ski Mountaineering Team in 2006 and 2008 and competed in two World Championships in Europe. In 2006, Steve launched his website, TetonAT.com, which was "Website Dedicated to Backcountry Skiing and Ski Mountaineering in Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park." Steve logged impressive ski descents in New Zealand, Antarctica, North and South America, Mexico, and Europe and documented them all on his site. He also provided cutting-edge gear reviews, followed trends and news in the backcountry ski industry, and hosted a forum for passionate discussion about backcountry skiing ethics and exploits. TetonAT was visited daily by a national and international audience, often logging upwards of 20,000 hits per a day. His well known and oft-quoted mantra on the site was "LIVE TO SKI." For Steve there were two seasons: winter and waiting for winter. As he once said "my inspiration comes from the mountains themselves. I love the silence, the wind, the sun, the ruggedness, and contrast between the soft snow and the jagged rocks."

Steve is survived by his parents, Stephen and Elaine Romeo of Tolland; his sisters, Lisa Romeo of Boston, Jennifer Romeo Higgins, and her husband, Michael, of Lighthouse Point, Fla.; and his adoring nephew, Michael Ryan, and niece, Brooke.

A Mass was held on March 13 at Our Lady of the Mountains Church in Jackson, followed by a public Celebration of Life at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. A private Celebration of Life will be held locally on April 21.

I have a little hat that Steve and Julia helped me choose that I bought at his shop in Jackson. It is my favorite hat for cold weather, and for some reason, it keeps me warmer than any other hat I have ever worn. It is now at least 10 years old and still my favorite. It's as though it's imbued with Steve's warmth and energy. I'm one more who is still missing him.

Steve's beautiful smile is what I remember best about him -- he smiled often and with sincerity. He found a lot of simple things that made him happy, and he set up challenges for himself that also gave him tremendous gratification when he achieved them. His smile made others happy, too, because we wanted to smile back at him. I will miss his smile and his friendship. The world is less bright for the loss of that smile. With condolences, Val Heemstra (Julia's mom)
