Obituary

Jarrett Lane
Narrows
Senior, Civil Engineering

Lane, 22, was a senior civil engineering student who was valedictorian of his high school class in tiny Narrows, Va., just 30 miles from Virginia Tech.

His high school put up a memorial to Lane that included pictures, musical instruments and his athletic jerseys.

Lane played the trombone, ran track, and played football and basketball at Narrows High School. "We're just kind of binding together as a family," Principal Robert Stump said.

Lane's brother-in-law Daniel Farrell called Lane fun-loving and "full of spirit."

"He had a caring heart and was a friend to everyone he met," Farrell said. "We are leaning on God's grace in these trying hours."

Not sure what to say?

Tracy, I was at my 39th class reunion in Narrows last weekend and learned that it was your son that was killed in the VT shooting. I'm so, so sorry and I feel so sad for you and your family. I was Janet Herd in high school. I taught baton and you took lessons from me. I hope you remember me. Know I'm lifting you and your family up in prayer daily. I have two sons and I can't even imagine what this must be like. I'd love to hear from you if you read this and have a chance to write. My...

You were my neighbor during your summer session, the summer session before your freshman year. We weren't close, but I remember hanging out with you. Getting a couple meals together. Playing volleyball outside of Vawter Hall. I didn't recognize your name when the names were released, since it had been about 4 years since that summer where we met. I didn't realize you were gone until visiting a website memorial for the victims of the shootings that included pictures. It hurt knowing you were...

By a twist of fate and the hand of an awesome and mighty God I had the honor and priviledge of meeting Jarrett's mother and grandmother this evening for the first time. After several minutes and many tears being shed, Jarrett's grandmother encouraged me to "keep praying" for them and I promise you I will.

Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy. With the deapest of sympathy for your loss.

Jarrett was a great person. I was fortunate to have known him & run Track with him in high school. He will forever be missed. God Bless You Jarrett. May you rest in peace.

A year later and your legacy still reigns on. You will be forever and always missed but never forgotten. I guess you proved true only the good die young.

The mother has great courage and fortitude, I too am a single mom raising two boys and it isn't always easy. Your mom has shown great strength every day after losing you Jarrett. Look over her and keep her going!! I read her story about a week ago and it filled my heart with saddness for her and for you. We will continue to keep you and your family in our prayers!
