John C. Coleman, 96, a resident of Wesley Village and a former resident of West Pittston, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born Feb. 28, 1921, he was a son of the late John A. and Louise Barnhart Coleman.
He graduated from West Pittston High School, attended Capital City College, Washington, D.C., and also Wilkes College.
John retired as vice president from First Eastern Bank of Wilkes-Barre after 38 years of banking.
He was a veteran of World War II and Korea, having flown as a pilot 292 combat missions. He retired from the 109th Field Artillery as battalion S-2 after completing 22 years of military service.
John was elected to the West Pittston School Board and served as treasurer until its merger into the Wyoming Area School District.
He was past president of the Plains Rotary Club and the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was also a charter member of the Plains Business and Professional Men's Association and served on its Board of Directors. He served as a committee member of Troop 352, Boy Scouts of America, and also on the Eagle Scout Review Committee. John was a member of Fox Hill Country Club, where he served on several committees, and was also a member of the Plains American Legion for more than 60 years. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Derma Sciences Inc. for 12 years, where he served on the Audit Committee and Compensation Committee.
John was a member of First United Methodist Church, West Pittston, and served as chairman of the Fiance Committee, chairman of the Administrative Council and chairman of the Missions Committee. He was made an honorary life member of the Board of Trustees and also the Administrative Council.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Jane Hutchison Coleman; brothers, Paul, Thomas and Russell Coleman; and sister, Martha Brautigan.
He is survived by his son, John Ronald Coleman, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Ted, Russell and Caroline; and great-grandson, Grayson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Wyoming Avenue, West Pittston, PA 18643.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
