Shirley McGlinn Obituary

CARBONDALE - Shirley Mura McGlinn, 68, passed away peacefully Dec. 24, at home, with her family by her side.

Shirley was born Oct. 7, 1944, to George and Virginia Mura in Leavenworth, Kan., and was raised by Virginia and Ralph Rodgers Jr.

In 1965, she married Bob McGlinn in Leavenworth. They were married for 47 years and raised their family in Carbondale.

Shirley was devoted to her family and especially loved playing, laughing, reading, and doing crafts with her three grandchildren. She cherished time spent with her children who brought her great joy. Shirley and Bob were avid sports fans and attended Saluki athletic events for more than 40 years.

Shirley graduated from Immaculata High School in 1962 and St. Mary College in 1966 in Leavenworth, Kan. She was awarded a National Science Founda-tion teaching fellowship at Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, Kan., for the 1966 to 1967 aca-demic year. She earned her master's degree at Southern Illinois University Carbon-dale in 1975. She taught at SIU, first as a teaching assistant and then as an instructor, for 39 years. Her passion for teaching and dedication to her students resulted in 13 teaching awards in her department, MEDPREP and the School of Medicine, as well as the Outstanding Term Faculty for the entire SIUC campus in 2007. Shirley also developed the Milestone Ceremony at MEDPREP, which is patterned after the white coat ceremony used at all medical schools. Shirley collaborated with colleague and good friend, Evelyn W. Jackson, on many educational projects and workshops around the country.

In 2011, Shirley was inducted into the Immaculata High School Hall of Fame in Leavenworth and selected as SIH Star Cancer Survi-vor.

She was preceded in death by parents, George Mura and Virginia Rodgers.

Survivors include her father, Ralph Rodgers; her husband, Bob McGlinn; son, Matthew McGlinn; daugh-ter, Maura Webb; son-in-law, Allen Webb; three grandchildren, Riana McGlinn, Eva Webb, and Joshua McGlinn; sister, Mary Helen Owens; brother-in-law, John Owens; sister, Patty Rod-gers; and brother Buddy Rodgers. Other survivors include Mary and Walt Datwyler, Dick and Elaine McGlinn, Bill and Louise McGlinn, and Ed and Judy McGlinn.

Shirley was particularly grateful for all of the support she received from her family, her extended families, friends and stu-dents during her life and during her battle with cancer. Her family extends the warmest thanks for the excellent care provided by her oncologist at Barnes West County in Creve Coeur, Mo., Dr. Michael Naughton and his excellent staff as well as Dr. Aliperti and his staff at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis. The family also extends a special thank you to her nurse from TIP Hos-pice, India Walker, for the gentle and loving care she provided Shirley.

A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, in the Carbondale Civic Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shirley McGlinn Scholarship Endowment at the Southern Illinois University Foundation (Carbondale, 62901), the Shirley Mura'62 McGlinn Scholarship at Immaculata High School in Leavenworth, Kan. (Administration Office, 320 N Broadway, Leavenworth, KS 66048), or American Cancer Society.

A Girl With A Beautiful Smile

I met a girl with a beautiful smile
but she left me for a while.
I met her again later in life
and we danced well into the night.
She left me again for a change of life
but she returned with her smile in sight.
We married one beautiful day and later
had children that loved to play.
We loved each other for many years
but her life ended with me in tears.
Even though she is nowhere in sight
I miss her dearly every night.
Perhaps some day we will meet again
and I will see that smile again.

I pray sweet blessings to your family. I thank them for sharing her with us.

Shirley Mura McGlinn was always growing into the very best most loving person she could be. My contact with her started back at Immaculata High School in Leavenworth, Kansas where she we were both involved in YCS ( Young Christian Students and CYO ( Catholic Youth organization. Someplace I have pictures of YCS study weeks we both attended and the natl. CYO convention in Kansas City. Shirley had a joyful, peaceful heart then and maintained it all of her life. I followed her courageous , graceful struggle with cancer through Larry Gunthers emails. We connected again the fall of 2011 at the Imac reunion. I COULD SEE THE DEEP FAITH AND PEACE THAT SHE HAD WITHIN. Her spirit was still shining bright, her love of life in full bloom. When we are touched by someone they are forever a part of us...no matter the time and distance. She remains forever with us in Spirit... a new special angel in heaven for us all to pray to and thank. The lesson: tell people daily while they are alive how they touch us. Say thank you often, write the note. Spread the joy and gratitude. Celebrate the loving life that Shirley lived.

My beautiful and beloved Aunt Shirley was such an amazing woman. With her incredible intellect, energy, and loving nature she changed the lives of her students. She was a genuine human being who always made others feel understood and appreciated. She was brilliant physically as well, with her crystal blue eyes, her radiant smile, and the glowing warmth of her presence. She had a wonderful, easy laugh which I will always remember. Knowing her and observing how she lived her life to the fullest has left an indelible mark on me and indeed changed me for the better. By her example, I have seen what true grace is. I will strive to live as she did and in this way, she will always be with me.

I was so very sad to hear about Mrs. McGlinn's passing. I first met her when interviewing for MEDPREP and grew to know her better after starting the program. She was such a bright and kind spirit. She offered words of encouragement to me when I had my own battle with cancer. She was truly and angel in earth and will be missed dearly. God bless her and her family.

I have known Shirley since the early 1970's. She was the leader of a small group of graduate students who worked in my lab in the Department of Zoology at SIU. She was a joy to work with and brought a spirit of harmony to the lab environment. She exemplified all of the qualities of students that make professors proud. Her work as a teaching assistant and developing researcher was superior, and not surprising, she was the first among my students to publish research in a peer reviewed jpurnal.

She was a consummate professional who brought the very best out of those with whom she worked. She was a giver by example, evidenced by her dedication, professionalism, generosity and friendship. She was even-tempered, an independent thinker and she commanded the attention and respect of those around her.

She will be fondly remembered by her students as well as her colleagues. Her family and friends may be comforted by her stellar record of achievements, and because she will be forever immortalized in the hearts and minds of her students and in the scientific literature. As her former teacher, I am deeply saddened that she has expired but feel privileged to have known and worked with her. I offer my heartfelt sympathy to her husband, Bob, and to their wonderful family.

Bob, Matt and Maura,

I was so saddened to learn of your loss. Shirley encountered her medical challenges with dignity and courage. Even though her connection with our family was as Ben's second graduate student at SIU, she was very kind and supportive with Tiger, Shelly and me. Our family will miss her most as a die-hard Saluki fan!

As a fellow cancer survivor, I admire the battles Shirley fought. She was an example to us to keep fighting and to her students to keep learning. Her spirit did not yield to that monster of a disease.
Shirley was always a happy soul, always willing to help anybody.
Thanks, Shirley, for being you.

Dear Mr. McGlinn, Matt and Maura,
Wrapping you each up in love and prayers for God's grace, comfort and healing. Mrs. McGlinn was an amazing, smart, beautiful, and beloved woman. Her accomplishments as a person are so many but I guess the one that stands out to me most was the wonderful mother that she was. As a young teenager she was practically a second Mom to me since Maura and I were best friends and inseparable throughout junior high and high school. She always had a sweet smile and hug for me and treated me like her own daughter. Mr. McGlinn was the vocal one but Mrs. McGlinn was the quiet, strong force behind the family. She was so full of love for her family and that was always evident. I loved her laugh and smile and beautiful hair and sparkly eyes. She was so proud of Matt and Maura and loved her grandchildren. She will live in our hearts forever and her legacy will shine on through each of you. Love and prayers for comfort, peace and understanding.
