Dear Gittings family,
My sincere condolences. Sue and Jim are a permanent part of my story. Both opened up chunks of the world that this sheltered Catholic kid from Pottstown had never known. Jim, of course, took me under wing as a young journalist. He was a wonderful mentor and teacher. But what he and Sue probably didn't know was how much they enriched my life in some of the conversations we had around the table in the kitchen of the home in Pottstown. Here's what I recall: exquisite little meals that Sue seemed to put together effortlessly (always with an explanation of the curry of the day). She allowed me to pester her with questions about their years in Pakistan and Japan. It was all quite exotic and amazing to me. And she also, I recall, was patient with endless questions about her work. I remember her art, from sketches to paintings, as wonderfully engaging.
It appears that her later years were rather productive ones as an artist and that was so pleasing to read.
I wish you all well in this time of grief but also wanted you to know of my treasured memories.

Thank you so much for posting your memories of our mother! Truly no one knows another's life, but we all have part of the picture. It means so much, thanks again.

My sympathies to the family. I worked w Sue as a secretary at U.S. Steel in the Alloy Sales department in downtown Pittsburgh around 1955 or 1956 for about a year. She was just married and so excited about preparing for her missionary work in Pakistan. I had not heard from her since but saw the obituary and wanted to tell the family how much she was admired as a young woman and what pleasant times we had together. I was so pleased to hear that she and Jim continued their missionary work. She was a lovely person.

Condolences on the death of your mother. She was a wonderful woman - I remember riding the train to Philly with her several times.
