The first time I read a word all by myself. The first time I looked inside a sugar egg and there was a STORY in there. The first time I held a newly-hatched chick. First grade in 1970/71 was filled with so many firsts, all of them colored with love and compassion and a great excitement -- an enduring enchantment with just how much there is to see in the world, how much to *learn*. Mrs Leithner gave me -- gave all of us -- a great gift. I'm sorry to hear of her death, sorry to hear that her loved ones have lost her; there was so much there to lose.

My daughter had Ms Leithner in Lagrange in 1980 and came home everyday telling me all the wonderful experiences she had that day in school. Mrs Leithner taught them how to bake when she was really teaching them math using the measurements. I was amazed! She made school fun while teaching ! I prayed that my son would get her as well and he did! To this day they talk about the best teacher they ever had to their children. RIP Mrs. Leithner. I hope my grandchildren have the experience that set my children's path.

She was an amazing teacher. I remember 1st grade so fondly because of her. I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to her family and friends. The world is a bit dimmer with her gone....

I think everyone has that one teacher who they feel has shaped them into the person they are today. For me it was Mrs. Leithner. What an unforgettable special teacher she was. I have more vivid memories from her class than any other year. She truly was an amazing creative teacher. May you be at rest with your best pal O'Brien in a place filled with green houses and Sharpie markers. - Class of 84
