Phillip Holloway Obituary

Philip N.

Holloway

Philip Holloway, Compost Hero, Dies at 57.

Philip N. Holloway was felled by an aggressive form of lung cancer on July 16, 2017. Diagnosed in April, he struggled mightily against this incurable disease; he died at home, as he wished, with family, friends and stalwart animal guardians, Pepper, Bandit, Moby and Martini, by his side. Throughout, he was surrounded by love.

Phil was born on February 23, 1960, to Miriam "Mickey" and Leslie "Les" Holloway, both of whom predeceased him. He was raised on a farm in Rhinebeck with his sister, Anne, and his brother, Paul. During his youth, "Phee" and his family worked with the American Friends Service Committee in Guatemala and Peru for peace and social justice. Phil graduated from Rhinebeck High School, where he developed many lasting friendships. He naturally gravitated to Guilford College, honoring its Quaker commitment to social responsibility. At Guilford, Phil's deep love for the Earth developed into his passion for Geology and he made many friends who remained an integral part of his life. After earning his B.S., Phil enjoyed a twenty-five-year career in environmental remediation before making the professional transition to the collection of food waste for compost.

Phil's greatest joy in life was in being a father. He was the most selfless of men, and everything he did was for his family: our joy was his joy. While Phil's younger son, Noel, focused on his studies in classical percussion performance, Phil and his older son, Tyler, formed Empire Zero, LLC, to divert food waste from landfills and return it to the soil. Phil was an early pioneer of food-waste collection for compost and poured his heart and soul into environmental stewardship.

Phil is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Donna Quinn, and his two sons, Tyler Quinn Holloway and Noel Quinn Holloway, of whom he was immeasurably proud. Phil was also survived by his brother Paul Holloway, his sister, Anne Phelan (Kevin), nieces and nephews Lea Gambuti, Hillary Magee Raimo, Caitlin Magee, Bill Magee, Gina Brinkman Quinn, and Liam Quinn as well as a loving extended family.

As Phil was a life-long beekeeper, in lieu of flowers, his family respectfully suggests donations in Phil's name to the Honeybee Conservancy.

A celebration of Phil's life will be held at the family home at 2333 Payne Road, Castleton, NY, on Saturday, July 29 beginning at 4pm. Phil touched many people and made many friends-all are welcome.

I hate how time robs us of those who meant so much. I will never forget that permanent smile growing up. Phil just always seemed to "be there" ready for anything the "gang" had in mind. So very happy I made the last reunion to see that smile one more time. You will be sorely missed my friend. My sincere Love and Prayers to everyone whos life he touched.

Sincerest condolences to the Holloway & Quinn families. Phil was an exceptional young man, and continued as such until his last days. A sweet, gentle giant. R.I.P
