John Monsees Obituary

John Robert Monsees February 2, 1953 - January 27, 2018 Rancho Santa Fe John Robert Monsees, was a much loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and great friend. He passed away on January 26, 2018. John was born in White Plains, NY and attended high school at Valhalla High, graduating salutatorian in 1971. He went on to Brown University, where he earned a B.A. in political science and made some life-long friends. He then moved to San Diego, where he earned his MBA from San Diego State University in 1980. John began his career in finance, first with Deloitte Haskins & Sells, and then moved on to eventually becoming CFO of a regional home builder. John and his wife, LaDonna have been residents of Rancho Santa Fe for 17 years.John met LaDonna through work. A sweet friendship developed into love and the two were married in June 1984. He also became a father to LaDonna's children, Holly and Eric, who were eight and ten years old when they met in 1980. He was devoted to them and brought much needed fun and energy to his new family. In addition to work and family, John was blessed with uncanny natural athletic abilities. He loved sports, especially baseball. He was an avid hiker and backpacker. John and LaDonna spent many vacations hiking, backpacking and skiing with family and friends in Telluride, CO., where they owned a home. His competitive drive and love of exercise meant cycling, swimming, and/or running daily. His biking friends were familiar with the sight of him pulling away from the pack as they charged up steep hills.John's life took a dramatic turn when at the young age of 42, he was diagnosed with brain cancer. His competitive nature stretched the two-year survival prediction to 22 years. When he could no longer swim, he biked and when he could no longer bike, he hiked for hours in the many trails near their home in Rancho Santa Fe. From his early years into his later years, John made people laugh with his humor and wit. He will be remembered for the fun-loving, handsome, strikingly fit man that he was. He is survived by his devoted wife, LaDonna Monsees; his two children and their spouses, Holly and Zachary Britton, Eric and Tanya Clifton; six grandchildren, Ian, Adria, Ellie, and Elias Britton and Tessa and Marley Clifton; his sister, Joan Blackburne and her family, Tom, Christine, Catherine, and Carolyn; and his best friend, Robert Weast.
