So sorry to just hear this! Joye and Homer were wonderful neighbors for many years!! Joye and I kept in touch some after I moved to Oklahoma. She was a wonderful person and I am sending her the biggest bouquet of purple flowers, because I know they were her favorite!!

What a wonderful life, and a wonderful legacy. Vicki, Greg and Rod, your mother was an inspiration to so many.

Mrs. Whitten was my second grade teacher at Jackson Heights in 1957-1958. Kind, loving, yet no nonsense are some of the adjectives I think of when recalling this special lady. She was just 33 or 34 years old, yet she had a childlike presence about her. Her compassion for some of my classmates, (and their less than stellar behaviors,) made me marvel at her strength, her firmness, yet her love as well. One of the finest lessons I learned from your mom, was about how to be a friend, and the qualities and characteristics of just such a person. She led by example. Proof in point, is in a photograph of that second grade class. One of my very best friends from that class sixty years ago, is still one of my dearest friends.
What an amazing woman, what an incredible life. It was my great pleasure to have known her.
Several years ago, while shopping at a local grocery store, I saw your mom again. Since 1957 was quite a long time ago, I introduced myself to her, rather than the usual "Hey! Remember me?" as so many young people do these days. She knew immediately who I was, and even remarked how much I looked like my father. She even told me a couple of Hank Kerber stories about the early years in what I think was the Hunter district.
During my nearly 4 decades working at a local elementary school, I found myself emulating my two favorite teachers. One was your mother, with her quiet determination and her love for the students. The other, from whom I learned the subtle, yet refined sense of humor in the sarcasm realm, was Ruffner.

You have my deepest sympathy. May good memories provide solace for your family during this challenging time. May God provide you with the assurance that you will see your loved one again. John 17:3.
