AVON - Ruby Carol Mitchell of rural Avon died peacefully Sunday morning, July 5, 2020, in Avon, at the home of her daughter, Linda.
She was born Nov. 16, 1924, in Warren County, the daughter of Dean and Hazel Niles Allen (deceased). Ruby married James Russell Mitchell at the Abingdon Christian Church on April 22, 1945, and they enjoyed 74 years together. He preceded her in death on June 15, 2019.
Her greatest joy was family gatherings. She was the mother of three daughters, Anita Mitchell, formerly of Galesburg (deceased), Carol (Jim, deceased) O'Rourke of Ada, Michigan, and Linda (Mel) Casper of Avon. She was a sister to Margery Hickerson (deceased).
She was lovingly called "Dama" by all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren are Kirk (Lori) Hunter of Avon, Erin (Dr. William) Lew of Minneapolis, Drs. Michael (Sonia) O'Rourke of Bartlett, Brian (Teresa) O'Rourke of Portland, Oregon, and Shannon (Baraka) O'Rourke Kasali of Urbana; and her great-grandchildren are Talon and Teagan Hunter, James, Henry, Samuel and Ethan Lew, Maya O'Rourke and Xavier O'Rourke, and Baby Kasali on the way. She is also survived by two step-granddaughters, Angie (Troy) Settles and Teri (David) Quick, and their families.
She graduated as salutatorian of the Class of 1942 at Abingdon High School. She later graduated from Western Illinois Teacher College in Macomb and taught at Cross Lanes and Pleasant Ridge rural schools. She was a member of the Abingdon Christian Church for 82 years. She was also a member of Hypatia Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Order of Eastern Star and Home Extension. She served as an election judge for 21 years for Fulton County, served on the Union Township Cemetery Board and was an early participant of Ag in the Classroom. Ruby took an active part in all school and 4-H activities in which her daughters were involved. She loved playing the piano, accompanying her girls as they performed in various events. As years passed, she instilled that love of music in all of her family. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and she especially enjoyed "Ranger" rides around the family farm.
A private service will be held at the Avon Cemetery. Rev. Will Brown will officiate. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel is assisting her family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Abingdon Christian Church or the Avon Fire and Rescue Department in care of Linda Casper, 619 Woods St., Avon, IL 61415.
