To Paul's family, I am very saddened to hear of your loss. Paul and I were umpire partners in the Northwest League during the 1990 season - his rookie year in baseball. He was a great athlete and a natural umpire. What made our crew click was that he we were both extremely hard workers on and off the field. Paul pushed me to be better and work even harder! Case in point: We had a doubleheader in Bend, Oregon that was paid in very hot weather. Despite this, Paul thought it would be a great idea to go for a 5-mile late afternoon run. I did not share this sentiment, but would not relent and allow him to outwork me. We went for the run, and later beers. Sadly, I never got a chance to see him or talk to him during his MLB career. I have always been extremely proud of him for going all the way to the majors. He passed way too young. Please accept my condolences. I thought I would take a moment to note the impact he had on my life and, undoubtedly, countless others.
