Wayne Goddard Obituary

November 9, 1939 -
November 14, 2018

Wayne L Goddard went home to be with the Lord on November 14, 2018. Wayne was born on November 9, 1938 in Hamilton, MT to George and Muriel Goddard. He graduated from High School in Gooding, ID in 1957. He married Phyllis Mae Crowe on April 4, 1959 in Twin Falls, ID. She was the love of his life. He said he knew he would marry her from the moment they met. Wayne served 4 years in the Army National Guard. In 1961, the family moved from Lewiston, ID to Eugene, OR. Wayne worked for several machine shops before leaving to go into full time knife making in 1973. He took his American Blade Society Mastersmith test in the shop of Bill Moran in Maryland. Wayne loved making knives, but his real passion was teaching and encouraging others to try their hand at the craft. He wrote articles for Blade Magazine and became their "Question and Answer" columnist for over 20 years. Those columns encouraged Wayne to write two books on knife making; The $50 Knife Shop and The Wonder of Knife Making. Wayne and Phyllis were instrumental in organizing the Oregon Knife Collectors Association and the 5160 Knife Club for local knife makers. In 2013, Wayne was inducted into the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame. It was his 50th year of knife making, and he was the 50th inductee. He thought that was pretty special. Wayne and Phyllis were members of First Baptist Church of Eugene and loved spending time with friends and family. Wayne is survived by his sister Patricia Wagner of Eugene, Son Steve Goddard (Susan) of Eugene, Daughter Connie Weaver (Ken) of Springfield, 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on December 15, 2018 at Fairfield Baptist Church in Eugene.

John & Jackie Foss:
We both spent many hours with Wayne and Phyllis and will miss them both.
We attended many Knife Shows in Costa Mesa with them and Wayne actually made Mrs. Foss a Custom Spatula for spreading Mayonnaise on the sandwiches she would make for the Knife makers .
We hope they are now together again.
