1948 ~ 2015
Sherman Christensen Smith (February 4, 1948-October 19, 2015) was born on a snowy winter's day while his family lived in Wyview Village in Provo, UT. He was the third child of Wilford E. Smith and Ruth Christensen Smith. He was an eager friend and motivated learner from his early years, involved in sports and student government. Sherm, his dad and three brothers (and their "extra" little brother, Gifford Nielsen) were always ready for a pick-up game of ball in the Smith family backyard. He loved his time as co-captain of the football team and as SBO president at BY High. From 1967-1970, he served an LDS mission to the Central German mission, where he began his lifelong love for the language, the food, and the people. Sherm graduated from BYU (true blue through and through) with a degree in German Literature. The highlight of his time at BYU was falling in love with his blue-eyed Bobbi Aboe. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles Temple on July 20th, 1972. Sherm immediately began medical school at the University of Utah. After graduation, Sherm, Bobbi, little Cecily and baby Tye moved to Denver, Colorado for internship and General surgery residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. They had another daughter, Carrie, and in July of 1981, they moved their family to Frankfurt, Germany where Sherm served as an active duty surgeon at Frankfurt Army Medical Center. With a Vanagon camper, they took advantage of the time they finally had together to travel and found that Europe became a beloved second home. What an adventure for their little family, and new baby Heidi. They returned to Salt Lake City and set up practice at Memorial Medical Center. They welcomed their fifth and final child, Marshall, in 1987. In December of 1990, his army reserve unit was activated during the Gulf War where he was stationed in Frankfurt again. In 1992, he joined Rocky Mountain Associated Physicians, where he found his true passion for gastric bypass surgery. He loved helping his patients and building relationships with his coworkers. In August of 2015, he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and died suddenly Monday morning, October 19th, from complications due to the cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Bobbi Aboe Smith, his children: Cecily Jane (Chandler) Horsley; Tye Sherman (Stacey) Smith; Carrie Ann (Joseph) LeBaron; Heidi Ruth (Ben) Allen; Marshall Gregory Smith; 14 adoring grandchildren; and siblings: Charlotte Knudsen; Wilford E. (Pam) Smith; Ronald T. (Audriana) Smith; Jeffery R. (Karen) Smith. He is preceeded in death by his parents, Wilford and Ruth Smith, his younger brother, George, and brother-in-law, Kent Knudsen. He was a good, kind, obedient, hardworking husband, father, and friend. He will be greatly missed by many.
Viewing will be held Friday, October 23, from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday 9:30-10:30 a.m. Funeral at 11:00 a.m. All services at Holladay 4th Ward building (4917 Viewmont St). Interment at East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery in Provo. Services provided by Larkin Mortuary.

We are so sorry to hear of Dr Smith's passing. After years of prayerful seeking, we were led to him for my husband's gastric bypass. It was worth traveling from out of state. The operation changed our lives, in ways that cannot be measured. We will forever be grateful for the part he has played in our lives.

As a colleague of Sherm's, I could always count on his wisdom and kind treatment of the patients that we co-managed.

It was with great sadness that I discovered his passing.

Rest easy Sherm. Prayers of comfort and solace for your family, your partners, your patients, your coworkers and all of us who will miss you.

Sherm and I served together as Missionaries in Dortmund. I loved him so much for all he did for me and the service I watched him give to others. We laughed a lot and prayed a lot together. I'm the companion that broke his false tooth off his retainer he was wearing when he had a mouth full of peanuts. I was trying to move his mouth up and down( horse play)which he had just done to me while I had peanuts in my mouth. I did not know of the retainer until a tooth shot out of his mouth and on to the floor. I was horrified and Sherm waited at least 5 minutes before showing me the retainer which brought a lot of laughter. God Bless his family

To the family of Dr. Smith Thank you for sharing this exceptional man. He literally saved my life. The reason I chose him to be my weight loss surgeon is because I saw him in the temple while I was going through the pre-surgery steps and I decided after seeing how humbly he served in the temple he was the surgeon I wanted.

You will never know how many lives this great and humble Dr. touched.

I am indeed sorry for your loss.

Grumpy T. Wilson.

My heart is truly heavy at the loss of Dr. Smith. He completely changed my ife. He gave me a life that I couldn't have even dreamed of. I had been fat my entire life. Not just fat, but I was the fattest person I knew. I was 30 years old, nearly 400 pounds, in an abusive marriage, and miserable. I was so exhausted, I would come home from working 2 jobs and fall asleep holding my children in my lap in front of the TV. I didn't love myself. Dr. Smith not only helped me to lose weight, he taught me that I am worth it. He gave me self confidence and for the first time in my life, I learned to love myself. I left an abusive marriage. Went to college and became a personal trainer, (I'm continuing my education studying dietetics) and have remarried and sealed in the LDS temple. We have a new baby and a wonderful life. None of these changes would have ever happened had it not been for Dr. Smith.

I have spoken to many who credit Dr. Smith with saving there lives, but not only did he save mine, he gave me a life. The life I had before wasn't even worth living.

I considered Sherm one of my very best friends growing up. He influenced me and showed me the correct path to follow. He was honorable and never deviated from his beliefs and convictions. I would sit on his bike handlebar and throw his newspapers on his daily route. I was there when he chipped his tooth on the diving board. I remember when he received his driver's license and we took off and toured Provo.
I was so proud to see him excel in academics and his journey to becoming a doctor. He had a brilliant career as a gifted surgeon and helped pioneer gastric bypass surgery here in Utah. I only wished we could have spent more time together these last years. My condolences to Bobbi and the entire Smith family for the loss of this great man. I have no doubt he is already busy on the other side and happy to be with his parents again.

One of my proudest accomplishments was to nominate Sherm Smith to run for Student Body President of BY High School, and to see him elected. He has been an outstanding man with a winning personality, and maintained high integrity throughout his life. I will miss him, though I haven't seen him since July 2006. I was looking forward to seeing him at our 50th year class reunion next year. My condolences to Bobbi and the whole family -- Sherm is on to adventures we can only dream of, until we catch up with him.

Dr. Smith was a great man and a great surgeon. He was caring and skillful. I am so saddened with his passing. Had so hoped to see him again. I was living in St. George at the time and he said whenever I came through SLC to stop in and see him for a consult, even at "no charge." In the operating room he was not sure he could do a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery on me because of so much scar tissue I had from multiple other abdominal surgeries. He told me what I might wake up to with an "open surgery." It was wonderful to be able to tell him because of him being such a good, faithful LDS man that "All I know, is that I had a blessing and was promised that my surgeon would be guided by the Lord and all would be well." When I woke up from surgery, I found that he had taken extra time and difficulty to make the laparoscopic surgery happen. He was amazing. I truly felt his caring. He changed my life. I am blessed to have gotten to know him and have him as my doctor and friend. Thank you to his family for sharing him with so many. He was amazing!!
