Don was raised in Missoula, MT, with his sister Claire McIver and brothers Fay and Ted Criswell, all deceased. He joined the Navy out of high school and was part of the 54th Seabee Battalion in WWII.

After the war, Don came back home to Missoula and graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in Business Administration. This is where he met the love of his life, Charlotte Davidson from Evansville, Indiana who was visiting her brother attending the University.
