Grace Mary Johnson June 4, 1934 - May 30, 2020 San Diego On Saturday, May 30, 2020, Grace Mary Johnson, a loving mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 85. A lifelong resident of the South Bay area, Grace began working for the SUHSD in 1971 and later became the registrar for Palomar High School in Chula Vista. She was a favorite among students who often came back to visit long after they had graduated. After 32 years, Grace retired from the job she loved so much.Throughout her lifetime, she traveled all over the world. From cruises to the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas, to tours of London and Paris, she did it all. Grace's favorite trip was to Rome and the Vatican. One thing you can count on was Grace's love for celebrating birthdays. She always remembered family birthdays with cards and phone calls. Her birthday was often celebrated in Las Vegas, as she loved to gamble and go shopping with her winnings.Grace's greatest love was her family. She enjoyed a special relationship with each and every member. Her life revolved around her three daughters. She enjoyed shopping on the weekends with them, or going to dinner and the movies. She liked all kinds of music and attended concerts with her girls. Her favorite was seeing Celine Dion in person and sang at the top of her lungs to every song. Her daily phone calls and constant support was appreciated and will be dearly missed. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters and sons-in-law: Sue Casey (John); Judy Barrick (Chris); and Cheryl Thurwanger. Grace is also remembered by her grandchildren: Jennifer, Michelle, Stephanie, Laura, Samuel, Matthew, and Mark; and three great-grandchildren.A private celebration of life will be held at a later time.

My hubby, Jim and I both worked for the Sweetwater District and Jim met Grace while working at Palomar from 1995-2007and we all became good friends. We went to lunch for birthdays and Christmas after retirement to keep in touch. We also called Grace weekly to check up on her. We had some good chats/laughs over morning coffee! RIP dear friend!

My heart dropped when I read of Grace's passing. We first worked together in 1972-74 with a special program that had been recently launched. Then in 1990 I returned to alternative ed. at Palomar High and there was Grace as registrar! It was so lovely to see her again. She gifted us all with her friendliness and encouragement. Grace never acted "put-out" with a request even in the midst of a very busy day. She handled everything professionally and in a kind manner. I have only good memories of Grace. My heart goes out to your families.

Sue, I was fortunate to have work with your Mom at Palomar HS early in my career. She was such a pleasure to talk with every day. She always had the time to just talk. She is one that I always remembered when I moved on with my career. Just a pleasure and a delight to have known.
My condolences to you and your family.

Grace was our secretary at Continuation Schoollater to become Paloma High School back in early 70s. She was a special, wonderful person. So caring, helpful, encouraging and did a great job. We all loved her. So sorry and sad to learn of her passing. What a bright light! I wish a couple other billion people could be just like Gracethe world would be a much better place for all of us. To Dick, Carl, Jim, Doug, Lou, Mike (me), and to everyone else at the school, Grace, was truly a Blessing. She made every day better by being herself. She was an angel. My heartfelt sympathies to her loved ones and friends.
